Description:
The fourth album from the band fronted by brother and sister Gert and Sarah Bettens, Almost Happy continues the quintessentially American folk-pop tradition once dominated by 10,000 Maniacs. The only difference is that K's Choice are from Belgium--although if it weren't for the Dutch nursery rhyme of the intro, there would be no way of knowing. The Maniacs links, meanwhile, are easier to spot. Sarah Bettens' gorgeously tender voice is the spit of former Maniac singer Natalie Merchant, and her solemn life-and-love observations, like the Maniacs' best, are countered by the sweetest melodies that save them from being dour and depre

The Maniacs links, meanwhile, are easier to spot. Sarah Bettens' gorgeously tender voice is the spit of former Maniac singer Natalie Merchant, and her solemn life-and-love observations, like the Maniacs' best, are countered by the sweetest melodies that save them from being dour and depressing. And like their forebears, K's Choice are at their best when packing a punch with the relatively up-beat pop of "Another Year", "Home" and the title track, and at their worst when not led by faithful female tones; the distinctive charm evaporates as soon brother Gert takes the vocal lead on "Shadowman". In essence, Almost Happy sounds as emotive and mature as the best of 10,000 Maniacs. --Dan Gennoe
