While being discovered by dangerously prolific New York rapper Nasir "Nas" Jones may have helped Amerie bag a record deal, that's where the connection ends. For All I Have not only does Nas refrain from making the obligatory guest appearance, but so does everyone else. In an unlikely break from the norm, the 22-year-old R&B singer's debut album is blissfully free of big-name guests, collaborators and producers, and most surprisingly, any hip-hop overtones. Instead it's her honey-sweet vocals and staggeringly effective songs that are the main attraction. Next to her technology-driven peers, Amerie's mid-90s style seems positively old skool; her melodies and beats are compelling not clever. But with a voice that's reminiscent of Aaliyah's purified grace one minute, and Mary J Blige's strength the next, the brooding mid-tempo love of "Got To Be There" and "Show Me"'s sweetly layered harmonies are all she needs. And while the lack of adventure may mean there's little in the way of attention seeking radio hits, with the phenomenally soulful strutting of "Why Don't We Fall in Love" and "I Just Died"'s floating-in-space melody, this is the stuff Grammys are made of. --Dan Gennoe
