After Glow is, essentially, a collection of Crowded House's "orphan songs"--the outtakes, the demos, and, yes, the barrel-scrapings--that seeks to shed some light on the history of one of the most successful bands of the 1990s. It's easy to see why Crowded House were so popular; anthemic, but understated, Neil Finn's New Zealand acoustic minstrels marked the triumph of sentimentality over cynicism--REM without the absurdity, U2 without the pomposity. After Glow, though, sheds uncomfortable light on their work methods--the sleeve notes refer to some compositions as "producer-inspired compounds", which it basically transpires is two mediocre songs pasted together by some studio wizard to make--surprise!--one slightly less mediocre, but largely meaningless, song (see the acoustic ramble of "Sacred Cow"). Elsewhere, we're deep in B-side land--"My Telly's Gone Bung" being a song about drummer Paul Hester's television breaking down. With Crowded House's consistent, prodigious back catalogue, don't be upset if After Glow is nudged off the bottom of your must-have list. -- Louis Pattison
