An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 7 months ago on 17 September 2014 11:43

I already saw this movie but, since it was ages ago, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, I have to admit that the damned thing was not so bad at all after all. Indeed, it would be the third and last romantic-comedy Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan would make together and, just like 'Sleepless in Seattle', I thought that Hanks was pitch-perfect here. At the time, Tom Hanks was pretty much at the height of his career but, from this point on, he would even become one of the most iconic actors at work nowadays. Concerning Meg Ryan, she was really good as well and, in fact, I thought that her character worked better than in 'Sleepless in Seattle'. However, concerning Ryan, even though Hanks's career would keep thriving seemingly forever, for Ryan, I'm afraid this movie was pretty much the beginning of the end since it was her last box-office success. So, the leads were really good but, to be honest, I was not sure about the whole concept though. I mean, many modern viewers might complain that the whole email thing is nowadays really outdated but I don't agree. Sure, the technology are certainly evolved but, more than 20 years later, we still might meet the people the same way, arguably with our smartphone and not with our computer (in fact, that's how I met my latest girlfriend). However, most of the movie had nothing to do with how they communicate with each other. In fact, it was more about the fact that, even though Joe Fox was working for a chain of mega bookstores, he was not such a bad guy after all and, in fact, even his huge store looked fine which was quite refreshing. Anyway, big store, small store, it wouldn't matter much in the future since most of them will disappear because of the rise of internet shopping. Coming back on our movie, even though some ideas were neat, the story was not really as compelling as it was in โ€˜Sleepless in Seattleโ€™, easily the best movie directed by Nora Ephron, and the last act was seriously clunky but it was entertaining enough. Anyway, to conclude, even though it is far from being a masterpiece, I think it is still a decent romantic-comedy and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Disappointing compared to 'Sleepless In Seattle'

Although I liked 'You've Got Mail', it's nothing compared to 'Sleepless In Seattle'

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are good though and it is still far from being a bad movie, at times it is funny and I think it is worth your time

Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks are at it again, join as they embark on yet another romantic quest this time with technological advances, local versus corporate business, and love in unexpected places.

ruined by corporate product placement

A perfect example of how a film could've been a cute romantic flick, getting completely ruined by corporate greed.

The obvious product placement is how this film simply feels like a feature-length ad for AOL. And Tom Hanks seems to have this effect on several other films he's done, most notably that FedEx film 'Cast Away'. He's a great actor, but a complete sellout to the big businesses. I'm surprised he hasn't done a film yet where he has a new tatoo of a logo on his forehead every 20 minutes.

The other thing that killed this movie is not that obvious for everyone, so let me point it out. The whole MORALE of the story is just to learn to accept fate if you're a small business owner, and even though you'll get trampled by the big box stores that move into your area, at their root, they are really nice guys, and if you accept your fate, they may even give you your own 'corner' inside their massive store so you can do storytelling for the neighborhood kids just like you used to in your small shop. excuse me while i go barf. truth is you'll be unemployed, while the big box store will hire pimple-faced teens for $5/hr who won't have a clue how to help you if you're looking for any specific book.

but other than those two points, its a decent romantic comedy. teaming up the stars of 'sleepless in seattle' and adding 'internet dating' to the mix, how could it not be popular film?
