An average movie

To be honest, I wasn’t really expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for John Dhal’s work, I thought I might as well check it out. Indeed, back in the 90's, John Dahl was a very interesting director, specialised in the film noir (I especially loved ‘Kill me again’ and ‘Red Rock West’) and, even though he had a decent career, this would be his last full length feature (since then he has been only working on various TV-shows). Eventually, this flick was something really different than his usual work but it was still far from being great, I’m afraid. Indeed, this time, he went for a black satirical comedy but the end-result was rather mixed. I mean, Ben Kingsley was, as usual, very good and Bill Pullman did a  fine  joob as well, Téa Leoni was decent but nothing great and Luke Wilson did his usual laid-back guy. So, there was nothing really to complain about the actors and the directing was competent enough. No, the main issue was with the story which was just too weak and honestly, not really believable. To conclude, it was a decent watch but John Dahl has done much better in the past.

slow and predictable

Frank (Ben Kingsley) is a killer for the Polish mob in Buffalo. He makes a lot of mistakes on the job, like not killing O'Leary (Dennis Farina) as requested. This is mostly due to the fact that Frank is an alcoholic. His boss Roman (Philip Baker Hall) sends him to San Francisco to clean up his act. There, Frank works part-time in a mortuary, where one day, he meets Laurel (Tea Leoni), a woman dangerously devoid of boundaries. Frank also goes to AA meetings and gets a sponsor (Luke Wilson).
Meanwhile, things are not going well in Buffalo where an Irish gang is threatening Frank's family business. Soon, Frank is forced to return home, but he is a changed man.

The movie starts off very slow, so I didn't expect to last through the whole film. In the end, let's put it simply: it's not the comedy of the year. It does have funny lines and funny moments. It's a great cast. It's just too bad that the whole story is sooo predictable.
It is however surprising to see Ben Kingsley in such a role. It certainly changes him (albeit slightly) from his other movies.
Still enjoyable. But don't expect much from this comedy. It's very light.
