Description:
“Up on the Rope” is a unique, quirky love story between Oscar, a sixteen year-old tightrope walker, and Lucia, the granddaughter of Oscar’s caretaker, Nikolai. Oscar has grown up (literally) on the tightrope, ten feet above the ground, his bedroom and living quarters cabled and rigged to the walls around him. Nikolai, his caretaker, has lived with (and below) Oscar from the time he was a young boy.

One day, Lucia shows up at the door with a basket of home-baked bread and a curiosity for the boy who lives “up on the rope.” She intrudes on his space, and begs him to let her have a shot at walking on the rope, as she has always dreamt of living up high. Oscar recoils and demands she get down. After many refusals, she finally climbs down, dejected. Disappointed, she leaves.
That evening Oscar is overcome with thoughts of her. He writes poems, and all the lines rhyme with Lucia. He posts photos by his bed, all of which look mysteriously like her. He has feverish dreams of crowds of people knocking down the door to get up on his rope. He awakens, startled, and commands Nikolai to keep watch with binoculars. At first, Nikolai sees nothing. But then, a creature approaches in the distance. It’s not the crowd Oscar had imagined; it’s Lucia—on stilts. She has returned, having found a way to be up high with him, but on her own terms.
