An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 3 months ago on 2 January 2011 11:19

To be honest, even though pretty much everyone was watching this TV show back then in the 90โ€™s, I was never a really big fan of the damned thing but still I though I should check out this 2nd feature film, just out of curiosity. Eventually, I thought it wasn't bad at all, as a matter of fact, I even enjoyed it more than the first movie they made about this show. Indeed, in my opinion, both leads were pretty good and the story was fairly entertaining. Eventually, the main issue was that the whole thing didn't really "feel" like a X-files movie at all. I mean, at the end of the day, it was more a typical detective story (a nice one by the way) and it felt as if they just added a psychic, Mulder and Scully, so they could call the damned thing an X-file movie. Unfortunately for the makers, nobody cared much about the X-files anymore, the whole thing backfired to them and this movie was eventually a flop. Still, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was not bad at all, and I think it is actually worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Not Quite.....

I really love the X-Files, in all its forms. The show is awesome, and the first movies was pretty good, but what in the heck? The supernatural, unexplained, and paranormal have always been an interest of mine, and this movie was suppose to be in that ally. Don't get me wrong here, there was some of that, but the title should be a dead give away. To me the whole movie was less X-Flies-ish, and more about two old agents in love getting together, and then struggling to agree with each other. There were a lot of plot points in the movie that had absolutely nothing to do with the unexplained. More like a soap opera with some X-Files elements, rather than an X-Files movie. That, and some of the characters seemed to be there just to be there. I would see a third one, but this reminds me that really anyone can get a hold of the rights to a franchise, so I got to be cautious.

Sadly, For Fans Only

When an FBI agent goes missing, FBI Special Agent Dakota Whitney (Amanda Peet) seeks the Mulder's help in debunking the psychic visions of a former priest who claims that the missing woman is still alive.

The X-Files usually manages to make the bizarre plausible if not believable. However, this is not the case with I Want to Believe. The movie spends a lot of time examining the nature of Mulder's and Scully's faith that the kidnapping case takes a back seat. The end result...an unevenly paced film and a rushed finale.

Fans will enjoy seeing Mulder and Scully again but aside from that I can't provide another reason for watching this movie.

I'm in two minds over this movie. First off, I'm an X Files fan so I may be bias. From an X Files fan stand point, I don't feel it would live up to expectations. Not only was it far from what I was expecting but it wasn't X File-ish enough for me. What I had read about it is that it could have been a stand alone movie and going by that it is a possibility except for certain parts of the story that eluded to other information. The thing is, if you could watch the series and be filled in enough to have those small bits of information make sense then it would have been ok (and not a stand alone at all, which it really wasn't anyway when it comes down to it), but I don't remember anything from the tv series having anything to do with the information mentioned, at all.
Now if you're not an X Files fan but, like a lot of people know what X Files is about (or have a vague idea), which is aliens, consipracy and science fiction, you're not going to get what you're expecting at all. You might still enjoy it though and I recommend going into see it but not thinking of the X Files at all.
My feel for it was that of a crime/mystery movie that could have done well as a non X Files related movie.
