The Secret Life of Pets review

Posted : 7 years, 8 months ago on 3 September 2016 08:15

So there are two movies that came out this year that are very much like Toy Story. Sausage Party (which takes food and makes them living creatures and is also only for adults) and this (which gives animals personalities and secret lives other than barking and such). I have been wanting to see both, but this is the first one I have managed to see. It has a pretty good cast of which I wouldn't have expected a few of them in. Chris Renaud of the Lorax and Despicable Me films co-directs this. The only other film I have seen by Yarrow Cheney is a Minion short called Puppy. Most of the writers have all done work with Chris Renaud before with The Lorax and Despicable Me movies. Simon Rich is the only one who hasn't been involved before as he is only known for writing Inside Out. Ah that opening is just adorable. It kind of reminds me of Oliver & Company except much happier. The montage is amusing and fun. That has to be one of the most interesting looking pigs for sure. I loved the ending. It was so heartwarming and beautiful. Make sure to watch for the midcredits as there is an extra scene there. There are some great gags and jokes here. I liked that they kept the personalities of the animals instead of like making them just act like that when their owners are around. All the characters were good and fun. My favorites though were Snowball, Tiberius, and Leonard. I never would have expected Kevin Hart to be a villain! He was definitely a scene stealer. Looks like they managed to have a dash of Sausage Party added in with that sausage factory scene. They even managed to make it a little disturbing. This was such an adorable story. Definitely a good one for kids or the family.

An average movie

Some time ago, it must have been last year summer, my wife told me that she saw this hilarious trailer about an animated feature dealing with some pets. Even though I am a massive movie junk, I had seriously no idea what she was talking about but it made me curious and when I looked it up, I found out that it was in fact this movie. Eventually, we had to wait a whole year to finally watch the damned thing but we managed to see it with all the kids, even with my step-daughter's boyfriend which was really neat. Well, it turned out to be a decent watch but not much more than that, I'm afraid. What bothered me the most, I think, was how they shamelessly copied 'Toy Story'. Indeed, the concept was basically that, when we are not around, the pets seem to have some secret life. On top of that, one of them suddenly has to face the competition of a new pet and becomes really jealous and worried about his situation. I mean, seriously, you have to agree, it was pretty much exactly the same idea that was developed in 'Toy Story'. The only thing they really added was some ridiculous and unbelievable bad guy living in the sewers with a whole community. I mean, the best moments were when they tried to provide some funny but still fairly realistic scenes but, unfortunately, they came up with a rather convoluted and underwhelming plot. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and it was above all really nice to see it with the whole family.
