A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 2 months ago on 3 March 2012 05:25

With Nicolas Cage, you never know what you'll get. Indeed, you could be  either a critial hit ('Bad Lieutenant') or something pretty lame ('Bangkok Dangerous'). This time around, the main character portrayed by Cage was a total loser, or at least someone who didn't appreciate his life but, still, I thought this flick was pretty good and I don't really understand why everyone says it was depressing. In fact, I thought the damned thing was actually pretty funny, sometimes even hilarious. On top of that, for once, you had here a rather realistic comedy which was more interesting than all those moronic comedies produced every year. Finally, Nicolas Cage was pretty good but I enjoyed even more Michael Caine who gave once again one of his amazing understated performances. The only issue was maybe that there were too many sub-plots dealing with archery, pedophilia and other things but the relationships between the different characters were already interesting , in my opinion. For Gore Verbinski, this flick was quite a change of pace (he had just released the first ‘Pirates of the Carribean’ and would make back-to-back the 2 sequels after this movie) but his fans were apparently not really supportive. Anyway, to conclude, I thought it was a pretty good flick and it is definitely worth a look.

Why do people hate this film? The Weather Man is actually one of the smartest, funniest and also one of the most heartbreaking films as well. By seeing the front cover of the DVD and poster of The Weather Man seems like a very bizarre and unique film but it isn't at all to be fair. I really liked this film in almost every aspect but they one thing that was slightly flawed about The Weather Man was that it didn't really have deep involvement regarding the weather and comparing how unpredictable life is just like the weather. I mean, it had that but not that much. The Weather Man teaches about life in a different way like I've ever seen before. This time it's about not being able to predict or guess what your life is going to be like.

Nicolas Cage hasn't delivered a great performance since The Weather Man which is why I think Nicolas Cage hasn't done a great film since then. David Spritz is a middle aged man who is a weather man for the Chicago TV. His personal life is very complicated because he is divorced and has two young children who are in mixed problems of their own. His son Michael is getting himself involved with his counciler but he is a paedophile and that becomes rather hard him David's life. Also, he younger daughter is 12 years old and she smokes and she is very overweight. He always tries his best to fix things but fails most of the time which does become pretty funny but you also feel sorry for him.

Gore Verbinski has tried to create a film that is very new to the films he has done before especially Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl. He does bring the comedy into The Weather Man as he did in Pirates Of The Caribbean. He is really good at creating films for pure entertainment. Verbinski hasn't done that many films but they have been good films which is what Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy and The Weather Man are.

This is Nicolas Cage's third best film so far after Adaptation and Matchstick Men. I haven't seen his Oscar-winning performance in Leaving Las Vegas just yet but will very soon. Gore Verbinski's best is obviously Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl. The Weather Man is a film that I cannot understand why people hate it which makes it underrated.

When's the nipper?

I've had a little bit of a affinity for archery and so when TV spots showed the movie with Cage's character shooting with a bow and arrow I was really interested.

Nicolas Cage plays David Spritz, a Chicago weatherman, who has so many things going on that most of his life seem like a daze.
For one he doesn't like his job as a local weather man as all he does is point and speak, and every once a while gets food thrown at him by "fans".
Next he's separated from his wife and is heading towards divorce.
He's got one daughter who is overweight, smokes, and called "camel toe" at school because of her tight clothing. And has a son with a past of drug problems that befriends his creepy rehab counselor.
And to top it off his father, played by Michael Caine, is diagnosed with lymphoma and only has a few months to live.
And the whole movie is how David tries to handle each of those situations, sometimes failing miserable.

While the scenes with Cage and Caine are good and thought provoking the rest of the movie is really bland and sometimes boring as all the actors felt like they were just reading the script and not putting anything else in.
Writing wasn't too bad just not great and music was the same.

With average characters in average real life scenario's really this movie a average movie.

Interesting

This was another interesting movie, although it was a bit more crude than it had to be. I thought Michael Caine's character was very enjoyable. He caught the theme of the movie when he said: "Do you know that the harder thing to do and the right thing to do are usually the same thing? Nothing that has meaning is easy. 'Easy' doesn't enter into grown-up life." This is a great message, but I don't think Nicolas Cage's character realized this idea to the fullest. The end tries to lead you to believe that he has.
