The Social Network review

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 13 March 2022 04:52

I heard a lot of promising things about The Social Network. And you know what, I agree with the positivity this film has received, for it is my idea of a modern classic. With an intriguing concept, it is for me one of the defining films I have seen recently, one of the best movies of 2010 and relevant in its themes of greed, betrayal, class tension, friendship and loyalty and concept.

Production-values-wise, The Social Network looks wonderful. The cinematography is incredibly skillful, and the editing is crisp. In fact, I'd sure The Social Network is director David Fincher's most stylish film since Se7en. I have heard a lot of mixed feelings on the score, while it is not my favourite of the year not like Toy Story 3, King's Speech and Inception, The Social Network's brooding, smooth and quite sexy score is very memorable and fits well with the film's occasionally quirky tone.

The Social Network is very well directed too. Fincher directs with an intensity and focus that makes The Social Network tied with Se7en as the best of his movies in my opinion. Another strong point is the screenplay which is very smart and sharp, while the story making the most of this intriguing concept is constantly snappy and engaging.

Also, all the characters are very well written and assembled, for me they are among the best-written characters in a Fincher movie. It also helps that the acting is as impeccable as it is. Jesse Eisenberg is very commanding as the titular character in a subtle sort of way, while Andrew Garfield also impresses as the "voice of reason" character. I was surprised in a good way by Justin Timberlake, while the weakest of the three leads, he does have a cocksure swagger here that he actually pulls off really well.

In conclusion, a wonderful film and one of the best of the year. 10/10 Bethany Cox

'The Social Network' is definitely one of the best movies of all time and not just of 2010! The plot is brilliantly written, the acting and directing are great and I love the music too! It's one of my selections for the best movie of 2010! I love it!

I've tried to like it...

Posted : 11 years, 3 months ago on 2 February 2013 06:22

When this first came out I saw the trailer and didn't fancy it. Then, it gradually became clear that it was getting almost unanimous critical praise, so I decided to go and see it. I didn't like it. I didn't hate it, I just came out at the end feeling absolutely nothing, as if I had been watching a blank screen for two hours.
However, the overwhelming critical consensus that this was a brilliant film, the seemingly endless awards/nominations, and recommendations from friends convinced me that I must have been wrong. Maybe I had just not been in the right mood at the cinema... So i gamely rented the DVD and sat down determined to like it this time. And, probably for this reason, I did find the first hour more engaging than I had done on first viewing. After that, gradually, the blankness began to set in again and by the end the same indifference I had felt before had returned.
So, i give up - hats off to all those who like it, I hope you continue to do so, but I just don't get it. It seems to me a very dull film about a very dull subject, based on the glib ironic concept that the founder of the world's biggest social network can't connect with the girl he really wants to (an irony which is, incidentally, totally fictional). It doesn't really say much about Facebook itself, other than that it's a bit shallow and superficial (shock revelation!) and as for the also unanimously praised 'whip-smart' dialogue - well, that was lost on me too; I maybe chuckled 2-3 times in 2 hours. Finally (and before I start ranting - I'm determined not to be one of these reviewers who gets FURIOUS when something they don't like is popular!) I felt that the film had no narrative climax. It really just trundles along (and you know where it's trundling to, as it's all told in flashback) until it gets to 2 hours and then sheepishly says 'Er... that's it now. Here are some captions about what happened to the characters after this bit, so you know it's the end.... er....Bye now'.
Ok, I'll stop now, that last bit is getting near to ranting territory. And anyway, why do I always feel more compelled to write reviews of things I don't like than things I do....? And why have I spent about 6 hours of my life (2 viewings + a couple of hours of reading internet reviews etc) trying to force myself to like something I never wanted to see in the first place?? What's wrong with me??
Ooh, end on a positive note: some good acting, especially Eisenberg and Timberlake I guess..

A boring bio pic movie that has Justin Timberlake in it. No way in hell I'd spend $1 seeing this, let alone movie ticket price. I already know what it's about. spoiler: click to read. I mean, just reading the tag line I know what's about; "You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies." Arg. Whatever.

When I heard they were making this I honestly thought it was a joke. However, it doesn't surprise me that they would make a movie based off this because they know people will pay to see it because it's about, like Facebook and stuff and there's some lame ass legal drama as well. I guess one could say it's a movie about how Mark Zuckerberg became the youngest billionaire in history but I really couldn't care less about how much money people make. In saying that I will now be one of those that will rate this movie an easy 0.5/5 without ever seeing it. I already explained why. To bad Fincher and Reznor put their name on this because I like those two guys a lot.

While this movie might be well written, well acted, and a good telling of the story, it only served to make me angrier and angrier at the main character, who is also a real life person who is widely disliked. I remember reluctantly joining Facebook in 2007, being so very opposed to the whole idea at the time, and hating hearing people talking endlessly on buses and in public about Facebook, and saying idiotic things like "Facebook me"...then I just sat through a movie and watched the evolution of a site I had no interest in and avoided like the plague.

Why did I crack? Because a fellow hold-out cracked in order to see baby pictures from a friend. I joined the insanity because she did. Now I wish, more than ever, that I hadn't, after watching this movie, and watching how M.Z. apparently screwed over anyone to create the site, including his best friend. Nice. If I weren't such an addict, and needing to be on the site for family and friends to reach me because they are all on there, I would leave right now.

This movie just pissed me off. I don't care about whether it was good or not. Taking my personal feelings out of the equation, sure, it was good. It was well written. It had some great acting, but...He's not a good person, and to have Rashida Jones' character at the very end of the movie tell him he's not an asshole...well, I am sorry, but I don't know how you could hear that story and not think he's an asshole/tool/douchebag/jerk, etc.

The Social Network review

I think this is the best movie made by David Fincher since Fight Club. when i first saw The Social Network, it was kind of boring, listening to all those lawyers talking about the same thing all the time, but then i saw it for second time and liked it more. the movie contains really good dialogs, and of course, the scrip is perfect. Actors weren't very good but still, the movie is good.

The history of one of the worlds biggest companies is very interesting to see and isn't boring at all. the movie shows how friends can make decisions, how they see what's right and what's wrong. there is friendship, argue, love and betrayal in just 2 hours which is filmed, directed and edited very well.

For me, this was the best movie of the year. King's speech is quite a good movie but it can be watched once or twice, but social network, is the movie that never makes me fell tired of watching it. from a great book was made a great script and from that script, Fincher made a movie, which would be interesting, entertaining and good to see. the music in the movie is also very good. it fits with the movie so well that you're just getting pleasure both with watching and listening to it.

The social network shows that money isn't the most important in life. it shows how a person get a lot of money and power, and at that time, lose friends and make more enemies.

Just absolutely brilliant. Superbly directed by the man that is David Fincher, with a mix of life in 2003 and a wonderful exploration of how the most famous social network was created. The exploration of Zuckerberg's personality and how he isolated his friend Saverin along the way. The blend of music and various scenes are some of the strong parts of the film and incredibly engaging also. The script is for sure oscar nominated material, with the quick dialogue and sharp mocks from Zuckerberg, creates such a superb film indeed. Highly recommended!10/10

I think this movie is WAY too long! Within the first 20 minutes you already know what the whole movie is about or at least ANYONE that knows anything about FB .. The computer jargon is WAY over the average computer users head (my mother had not a CLUE what was going on half the time, but Oprah TOLD her to watch it) LOL! Wait for it to come on TV!
