The Ruins review

Posted : 11 years, 10 months ago on 15 July 2012 08:54

I quite liked, but could have been better, after all worth watching. the interpretation of the characters was cool and the film got past that feeling of despair and imminent death, for lovers of gory films will be a full plate.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 7 months ago on 27 September 2011 10:55

Nowadays, I have Netflix and Popcorn and, not only I have since then an endless selection or movies to choose from but, as a result, I have become slightly more picky regarding the movies I watch. Before, I used to watch pretty much anything as long as it was starring one or two actors I was interested in and, as a result, I would sometimes end up watching some really obscure features. This movie was a perfect example. Indeed, as usual, I didn't know much about this movie before watching it and, honestly, I think it is the best way to watch this flick. Basically, the damned thing started out with your usual WASP kids on holiday and, after a rather slow start, you finally get the scary stuff with those plants. Actually, when you think about it, the whole thing was actually rather ridiculous but they still managed to actually pull it off and I thought it was really scary. Later on, they added some pretty nasty gore scenes and, obviously, we have to thankt the current horror porn wave (โ€˜Sawโ€™, โ€˜Hostelโ€™,....) for those rather uninteresting and disgusting bits. Honestly, I'm more scared when I don't see some things, when I have to use my own imagination, than when I get to see someone butchered in close-up which is never really scary or entertaining. Anyway, in spite of its falws, it was a well made and fairly entertaining flick and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Better Than Expected

"The Ruins" is neither a 1 nor a 10. A masterpiece it is not, but it's really not all that bad.

The thing that irks some people is that they want to know why stuff happens. In all honesty, it doesn't really matter here. Whether the characters know why or not, it won't do them any good in this case.

Personally, I sort of enjoy not knowing why. Much like "Cloverfield", the situation is what it is. It doesn't matter how the problem started; it only matters if/how you survive it.

I braced myself for a problematic ending from the get-go due to the reviews that I read before seeing the film. Yes, it's not a perfect ending, but it was not as bad as I expected. It could have been better and it also could have been worse.

Personally, I feel that "The Ruins" was better than the trailer presented it to be. It gave no indication why some girl's skin was crawling and, honestly, I didn't even care why it was. I was up for seeing a horror flick so I gave it a shot.

I'm happy enough with "The Ruins". Generally, it's an entertaining enough film.

If you don't have high expectations, enjoy horror and 90 minutes to kill, this movie might just be a good option for you.
