The Others review

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 1 April 2022 09:37

The film may start off a little on the slow side, but essentially it is a truly chilling and effective period horror film, with just the right chills and thrills. Superbly directed and brilliantly written, "The Others" hits all the right boxes. Then there is an atmospheric music score and truly stunning cinematography and period detail(the house especially was fantastic). The story is an original one, very rarely gets confusing and goes along at a good pace. And the performances are wonderful, Nicole Kidman without a doubt gives one of the best performances I have seen her give in years, it was a performance of true intensity. Alakina Mann and James Bentley are outstanding as her children, and Christopher Ecceleston is effective in a small role. Asides from Kidman, Fionnula Flannagan is truly sinister and chilling as the housekeeper. Like Mrs Danvers in the Hitchcock film "Rebecca" while she is merely a secondary character, she does so much to enhance the story. All in all, this is a great film, and I recommend it highly. 9.5/10 Bethany Cox

An average movie

I already saw this movie, in fact, I’m pretty sure I saw it in the movie theater when it was released. Anyway, it was years ago and I was quite eager to give it a 2nd chance. I remember it very well, before this movie was released, there was quite some buzz about it. Indeed, it was Alejandro Amenabar’s first US feature after his breakthrough with ‘Abre los ojos’ and Nicole Kidman was pretty much at the top of her game at the time. Eventually, back then, it turned out to be a critical and commercial success so I had some rather high expectations before watching it the first time around. At the time, even though it was definitely a decent gothic horror feature with a very nice mood and some solid acting from Nicole Kidman, I can’t say I was really blown away by the whole thing though. Well, after all these years, after rewatching the damned thing, I still ended up with the same feeling, I'm afraid. Basically, pretty much like ‘The Sixth Sense’ which was released just a couple of years before, the whole thing ended up with a supposedly clever twist ending (the twist in both movies was actually quite similar) but I figured out that this ending was not actually the issue with this movie. Indeed, the issue was that, while it looked very nice, nothing really noteworthy occured through the whole duration and, in my opinion, it is a pretty-looking film but rather shallow after all. I mean, they spent so much time closing curtains and opening and closing doors (seriously, this topic took maybe half of the duration) but, eventually, what was that all about since there was very little evidence that these kids were sick at all. Anyway, to conclude, even if it never really dazzled me, I have to admit it that it was still a decent watch though and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

yep as far as twists go this outshines most. Found myself glued to it throughout - even though it dose move very much at its own pace. Stick with it and the reward is worthwhile.

Very good horror/thriller film!

I was unsure about what I was going to make of The Others because it seemed quite a scary story but when I did see it I wasn't that scared by it at all to be honest. The reason for this is that I knew what I was going to expect from a film like this. I knew I was going to expect a very unpredictable twist that would leave me in great shock in which it did. This film is very similar to The Sixth Sense not because of the seeing of the dead people but because of the way it is filmed, the characters seem quite similar and also the story is rather similar as well. It was more of a tense thriller rather than a horror story. Yes, it does involve ghosts but you don't see ghosts throughout the whole film. However, there are ghosts involved within the story. I think the poster of The Others is definitely one of the best posters I think I've ever seen. It isn't because its of Nicole Kidman but because she's holding a light and the colourful effect it has on her and also the title as well and the colourful effect it had.

Nicole Kidman's performance as Grace was very heartfelt and was rather terrifying because it was hard to predict about what was going to happen, who the villains are and also how the events that occur affect the characters within the film. Grace is a young single mother who is raising her two young children after her husband and the children's father has in fact gone to fight in the war. She lives in a large mansion with her children and after three mysterious servants come along Grace begins to suspect that the house is haunted and possessed by ghosts. Nicole's performance was like Haley Joel Osment's performance in The Sixth Sense because both of their characters had tears coming out of their eyes most of the time and also because they are characters that I feel that the audience of the film would feel sorry for. Alejandro Amenábar's directing of The Others was just really good.

If The Others was directed by M. Night Shyamalan then it would be too similar to The Sixth Sense. Even without the same director they both have that very unique similarity. Because of this film's PG-13/12A rating this film probably received a few complaints saying it was too scary. I can understand that they would find it scary but I personally don't think it was a terrifying story. It was just a tense psychological thriller. It should be rated 15/R to reassure young teenagers or even children under 10 that it is a psychological horror/thriller film. Nicole Kidman has delivered two performances in the same year that have been very heartfelt and have been very emotional and have also been pretty tense characters and what the fate of each of the characters could be.

Her performance in The Others is sensational but I preferred her performances in films such as Moulin Rouge! and Eyes Wide Shut. The Others is a film that I would recommend to those people who either like or love The Sixth Sense because they are very similar. Also, if anyone is in the mood for a night in and wanting to watch something with suspense in it. If so, then The Others is a top choice for you. The Others is an absolutely fantastic film that isn't really a horror, it is more of a thriller. One of the best films of 2001. I think I prefer The Others to The Sixth Sense. It is a deeply enjoyable tense thrill ride that won't let go of your eyes until the ending credits roll.
