Batman celebrated in Lego

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 14 March 2022 03:36

Was very pleasantly surprised by 'The LEGO Movie'. Initially wasn't sure as to whether a film based on a popular (and timeless) children's toy merchandise would work, but it ended up being one of the best animated films that year and one of the year's most entertaining.

'The LEGO Batman Movie' was seen with higher expectations, knowing what to expect and being somebody who likes Batman very much, and was every bit as good if not better. Its only stumbling block is the last half hour or so, which tonally (with things taking a more dramatic and darker tone) felt too far removed from the rest of the film and not only did it lose momentum it also felt somewhat overblown. With that being said, 'The LEGO Batman Movie' was a sheer delight for Batman and superhero fans, anybody who loved 'The LEGO Movie' and wants to see a fresh take on Batman and superheroes will not be disappointed.

Like with 'The LEGO Movie', the animation is really first rate, the vibrant yet dynamic colours are remarkably vivid to the extent that it makes the eyes pop, the backgrounds are immaculately designed, the characters look remarkably good in Lego form and a lot of the visuals especially in the action are very inventive. There is a bright and breezy soundtrack that compliments The Lego Movie beautifully, a lot of it is very catchy with a touch of humour while also giving room for a more understated touch.

Again, the script bursts with imaginative verbal and visual gags, while there is a sharp wit, snappy dialogue and thick and fast jokes that all hit their mark. A lot of it is hilarious and makes the film one of 2017's most entertaining, but it's more than just comedy. There is a lot of poignant heart, block-busting action and some inspirational messaging. What makes 'The LEGO Batman Movie' especially good is how it feels like a celebration of Batman while mocking previous incarnations and his origins with glee.

Story is fast-paced and energetic, with lots of humour and heart. There are a lot of characters here but not too many, the characters (heroes and villains) have their entertaining quirks and personalities yet the film really allows you to properly care for them as well. The voice work is exemplary, with note perfect turns from Will Arnett and Ralph Fiennes and actors who on paper sounded completely wrong for their roles actually nailing them (Zach Galifianakis could easily have been a disaster as Joker but was both entertaining and menacing, Michael Cera is also the most likable he has been in a long time).

In summary, wonderful, perfect for kids and adults alike and a delight for Batman/superhero fans. 9/10 Bethany Cox

The Lego Batman Movie review

Fun and with a nice message.
This movie is much better than the pretentious version of Nolan.
Although I had some of the cancers of superhero movies. But it is still an excellent family movie.

"The Lego Batman Movie" (2017)

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

A cooler-than-ever Batman must deal with the usual suspects as they plan to rule Gotham City, while discovering that he has accidentally adopted a teenage orphan who wishes to become his sidekick.

I was actually dreading watching this movie, because I found the trailers distinctly offputting. I wanted to see Batman, not a spoof of him. And at first, the movie was exactly what I feared: the character was a complete show-off.

But when the movie calmed down and the family-themed story emerged, I ended up really getting into it, finding it engaging and even kind of touching. It allowed me to easily stop thinking of this character as Batman, but just a grief-ridden guy trying to find something he could call family again.

Another big surprise that I really took to was the gallery of villains the Joker recruits in the Phantom Zone.

I have to say, I love this movie's take on Barbara Gordon: a highly skilled cop who's her father's replacement as commissioner.

Another highlight for me was seeing Alfred don a Batsuit โ€“ and one reminiscent of the Adam West one, so it's like the old Batman fighting alongside the new.

One reservation I had still holds true, though. Why did this even have to be Lego? It barely has anything to do with building or imagination.

In conclusion, I have mixed feelings on this movie: I hate it when it's spoofing Batman, but I love it when it's doing its own thing.

My rating: 65%

A good movie

Posted : 7 years, 2 months ago on 26 February 2017 07:06

Usually, the first movie I see each year turns out to be pretty lame. For example, in 2016, I started the year with 'The Fifth Wave' which turned out to be so weak that, even after watching maybe 50 movies released the same year, it was still the worst of the whole bunch. Well, 2017 broke thisย  tradition as the first movie was actualy pretty decent. Indeed, 'The Lego Movie' was at the time a nice surprise and this spin-off was a decent follow-up. Sure, it was maybe not an improvement but, at least, it was not a step down. This time, they slightly turned down the meta aspect of this franchise and, in fact, at least, a third of it was actually a rather straightforward batman installment but it wasn't an issue. Indeed, I really enjoyed how they managed to keep the dark and gloomy mood linked to this character but they still kept the daft sense of humor linked to the Lego franchise and this mix worked really well. To be honest, I'm not really sure if it will work with a 3rd movie as those movies are just so busy and, to ย be honest, rather hyperactive but, since this movie did fairly well at the box-office, it would surely come up at some point. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing really amazing, I thought it was fairly entertaining and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

The Lego Batman Movie review

Posted : 7 years, 2 months ago on 26 February 2017 06:52

Notes:
*I loved The Lego Movie when that came out.
*Batman was one of the funniest things about that one.
*So when they were going to go ahead and do a solo film for him I knew I would check it out.
*The cast here is a pretty great selection.
*This is the first movie directed by Chris McKay who also worked on Robot Chicken.
*Seth Grahame-Smith also wrote Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and Dark Shadows.
*Chris McKenna also wrote Igor as well as the upcoming Jumanji and Spider-Man films.
*Erik Sommers will also be writing with Chris McKenna on said films.
*Jared Stern also wrote Wreck-It Ralph, The Internship, The Watch, and Mr. Popper's Penguins.
*This is the first of two for writer John Wittington.
*Now my wife decided this would be what we would watch today.
*Let's see how good it is.

Pros:
*The popculture references were great.
*The way they poked fun at other films and movie characters was great.
*I loved all the inside batfan jokes.
*The fourth wall breaking was fun.
*In fact all the jokes were pretty amusing.

Cons:
*They had gremlins but no Gizmo!
*There were no extra scenes at the end.

Verdict:
It's a pretty amusing spin-off to The Lego Movie. Of course Batman can hold his own as a character. Will Arnett does a great job with the character feature length. It's full of inside jokes for Batman fans, but I still think people will enjoy it even if they aren't. It's pretty amusing throughout and keeps you interested. It was definitely worth checking out.
