An average movie

Posted : 3 years, 9 months ago on 2 July 2020 11:16

Even though this movie barely got noticed when it was released, I still wanted to check it out. Indeed, I still haven’t watched ‘Cannibal Holocaust’ and I really liked the idea of a modern horror flick taking place in the Amazon with some cannibals. Unfortunately, it turned out to be another seriously weak directing effort from Eli Roth, I’m afraid. Seriously, the first half, pretty much until their plane crashed in the jungle, was just cringe-inducing to behold. Above all, it was due to the fact that the damned thing was so poorly written. I mean, you had a bunch of characters who were all barely/badly introduced and Lorenza Izzo was the only one who was at least a little bit charismatic but she couldn’t do much with this rather abysmal material. The cast was still pretty weak though. The political agenda of this movie was also pretty much impossible to follow. I mean, on one hand, it was supposed to be a trashy horror flick involving a cannibal tribe living in the Amazon so they were basically the evil bad guys but, on the other hand, they tried also to be realistic about the environmental threat  going on in the Amazon and the fact that such tribes should be protected so we should care about them after all? Seriously, it was just priceless to see the main character coming back from this ordeal and reporting that there was nothing wrong with this tribe…. Seriously, just WTF?!? At least, when they finally got to this village, after 45 mins of pretty much nothing interesting going on, the mayhem was not bad and pretty gruesome to behold but even these scenes became rapidly repetitive and rather tedious to behold. Anyway, to conclude, even if the damned thing had some potential, it still turned out to be pretty weak after all and I don’t think it is really worth a look except maybe if you are a die-hard fan of the genre.

The Green Inferno review

I cannot believe how utterly stupid, incompetent, badly written/directed, and shamelessly lame this piece of crap was. Utter disappointment. Cannibal Holocaust remains the untouched masterpiece of cannibal cinema. This movie on the other hand is complete inane garbage with its incredulous characters, ridiculous dialogue, and a complete lack of commitment to the sub-genre that just results watered down imitation of the greats. Also, one of the WORST endings to a horror movie EVER.

Typical Eli Roth film, for better or worse

Posted : 8 years, 1 month ago on 5 March 2016 01:44

"Get media attention. Right or wrong, you need cameras on them. That's the only way people change their behavior. The threat of embarrassment. You must shame them."

The Green Inferno is writer/director Eli Roth's tribute to cannibal horror movies of the '70s and '80s, most notably Cannibal Holocaust and Woman from Deep River. And indeed, this type of flick is a good fit for Roth's cinematic tendencies, as he enjoys indulging in excessive gore, and his horrors are often labelled as "torture porn." Even though Roth produces countless features on a yearly basis, this is actually his first helming endeavour since 2007's limp misfire Hostel: Part II, and the filmmaker clearly hasn't learned a great deal from his mistakes. There's gore aplenty in The Green Inferno, but it lacks actual terror and chills, and it's visibly hampered by its restricted budget. The Cannibal Holocaust influence is readily apparent throughout, as Roth has basically created the closest replication possible without directly remaking the controversial classic.

The daughter of a United Nations lawyer, college student Justine (Lorenza Izzo) has a crush on handsome campus rebel Alejandro (Ariel Levy), who heads a student activist group. Spurred on by her interest in Alejandro, Justine joins the group, and reluctantly agrees to a trip to Peru to protest the bulldozing of rainforests. The protest goes off as planned, making headlines around the world, but Justine is left disillusioned, realising that Alejandro cannot be trusted and doesn't care about her safety. Making matters worse, the students are soon captured by a cannibal tribe, who intend to butcher and eat them all, one at a time.

The Green Inferno is the fourth movie that Roth has directed, and it follows the same formula, with dim-witted young people marching into unfamiliar territory where they are systematically killed off. Cabin Fever featured rural rednecks as the killers, while the Hostel films used Third World chaos to punish the naiveté of the leading characters. And now Roth turns his attention to indigenous South American tribes, though it still feels like more of the same. Considering that this is his first directorial outing in a few years, it's disheartening that Roth isn't interested in a challenge, and though he does attempt to inject some satire and commentary into the proceedings, it's text rather than subtext, and it's far less effective than the still-potent Cannibal Holocaust.

Despite impressive make-up effects by veterans Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger, The Green Inferno feels cheap to its core, with ugly digital cinematography that carries an amateurish look. This may be a $5 million horror flick, but 2015's Bone Tomahawk was produced for a fraction of that cost, and still looks far more authentic and cinematic. There's no snap or spark to elevate The Green Inferno above the ordinary, with plodding, workmanlike pacing and unconvincing performances across the board. Although Roth fills the frame with blood and guts, the result is thoroughly joyless, with no thought towards tact or style to make it palatable. To be fair, however, Manuel Riveiro's original score is effective, and there are some comedic touches that do work, including stoned cannibals who get the munchies.

It's actually somewhat miraculous that The Green Inferno ever saw the light of day. Filmed all the way back in 2012, it was set for release in 2013, but wound up being shelved for two years due to financial issues. With all that time between shooting and release, there's really no excuse for such a poor final product. The movie does admittedly boast nice locations, with filming having taken place deep in the Amazon jungle featuring real natives as extras (who had no idea what a movie was), but Roth's filmmaking is too slipshod, and the writing is hard to defend.

4.1/10

TAKE A BITE OF HUMAN FLESH

Torture gore porn. Characters were stupid and made unnecessary things like jerking off because of being scared or shitting diarrhea. Practical effects were good, minus the CGI ants.

The Green Inferno review

Posted : 8 years, 6 months ago on 17 October 2015 02:34

Thoughts before I watched this.
1. Finally it's out I have been waiting for like 2 years!
2. I see a few stars are from Knock Knock and/or Aftershock.
3. Well it is written by one of the writers of both films.
4. I like the behind the scenes facts for this.
5. Sure it's like Cannibal Holocaust, but hey I don't mind an updated version.
6. At least this time Lorenza Izzo plays a heroine.
7. First Daryl Sabara takes a crack at Rob Zombie's cinema universe and now Eli Roth.
8. This should be better than Knock Knock, but what about Aftershock?
9. Oh here we go about to start! So Excited!

"A group of student activists travels to the Amazon to save the rain forest and soon discover that they are not alone, and that no good deed goes unpunished."

Thoughts while I watched this.
1. At least this starts with a little scene before the opening credits.
2. I can't tell if Sky Ferreira is not a good actor or she is meant to be like this.
3. Hmm is this foreshadowing?
4. Oh yeah these images are kind of hard to look at and we haven't even gotten to the Amazon yet.
5. Seriously dude, WTF?
6. Lol from Genital Mutilation to talking about Ants.
7. This guy is way different than he was in Knock Knock. Doesn't even look the same.
8. Haha didn't see that coming. Great comedic timing.
9. I wonder if she is still mad about what she did to her husband and house in Knock Knock.
10. Yeah it seems Sky isn't at home when it comes to acting.
11. Whoa didn't need to see that, but what happened after was pretty amusing.
12. No that is not a good omen you are in a horror film!
13. Wow that was screwed up!
14. Oh trust me you guys haven't been through anything yet.
15. I can't decide whether to like Alejandro or not.
16. On the other hand I absolutely despise Kara.
17. Oh shit it's about to go down!
18. Lol why am I laughing at the guy who just threw up in his own face?
19. Oh Shit!
20. What an idiot!
21. Man I didn't see all that coming!
22. Hey everyone we brought dinner!
23. Why do I find The Elder oddly appealing?
24. Aww noooo! Holy hell!
25. Oh it's all fine for them they are preparing food like it's any other day WTF lol.
26. Well the lucky ones definitely died in the crash.
27. Now I know how I feel about Alejandro.
28. Oh damn that's screwed up!
29. I kind of wonder what happened though.
30. That guy has some serious issues...
31. The escape plan was kind of silly.
32. Come on noooo!
33. Oh I see.
34. That was sweet in a way.
35. I would have done the same thing.
36. Whoa nice didn't expect that.
37. That's quite intriguing.
38. Haha that was odd.
39. Interesting that they added the twitters of the main cast in the credits.
40. Oh there is more mid-credits hmm.
41. Uh oh is there gonna be a sequel!?

Thoughts after I watched this.
1. That was pretty fun.
2. It wasn't quite as disturbed as I was expecting though.
3. Lorenza Izzo is pretty awesome.
4. I thought everyone did quite well here.
5. Lars and Daniel were the best.
6. I loved the look of The Elder and The Bald Headhunter.
7. This was very colorful.
8. Are there even such things as good omens?
9. I wonder what the plan is if a sequel is made.
10. It's definitely an Eli Roth movie.
11. So if are familiar with Eli Roth then this is something you might enjoy.
