An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I really struggled to connect with the damned thing after all. Basically, the concept was to show the lives of various New Yorkers a year after the tragic events of 09/11 which wasn’t necessarily a bad idea, in the contrary. Unfortunately, I’m afraid I never cared about any of these subplots or any of the characters involved. As usual with this kind of features, some of these stories might have had some potential but, as you keep jumping from one to the another, they all ended up being rather half-baked after all. I was wondering if it would eventually become a hyperlink feature, a genre I used to love at some point but it has been terribly overused by now, but I don’t think it really qualified since all the stories didn’t connect at all together towards the end (at some point, some of the characters did get into an elevator but I still don’t think it counts). At least, all these characters and tales did feel convincing and believable but it still didn’t make them interesting enough. By the way, when I think again about it, out of most of these 5 subplots, if you would remove 09/11, I don’t think it would have had much impact on how their lives would have been depicted in this movie. At least, it was a good reminder of how charming and charismatic Maggie Gyllenhaal used to be back in those days. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I have to admit that it was still a decent watch and I guess it is still worth a look if you really like the genre.
