The Day After Tomorrow review

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 27 March 2022 08:20

The Day After Tomorrow is not a bad movie by all means. In fact, it's an uneven but decent film. The film does start off absolutely brilliantly, with a wonderful idea for a story and truly spectacular special effects. As a matter of fact, the whole film is well worth watching for the special effects alone. The acting is not too bad; Jake Gyllanhaal is rather bland, but Dennis Quaid is a superb lead. Plus Emmy Rosum looks positively radiant and Ian Holm is as reliable as ever. The direction from Roland Emmerich was surprisingly good, there have been times when I have found his direction too murky and unfocused, but no it was above decent here.

However, the second half isn't as impressive. Whereas the first half is very like a typical disaster movie, the second half for me as it focused on the rescue mission felt more of a thriller. The screenplay in general could have done with more precision and focus too, there is good interplay sometimes but on the whole I found the screenplay and some of the characters underdeveloped. My main problem though with The Day After Tomorrow was the pace, for my liking it was too leisurely and too stodgy.

All in all, uneven it is but it is a decent disaster movie. The first half I can watch again and again, but the second half for me was a bit of a letdown. 7/10 Bethany Cox

The Day After Tomorrow review

Eerily this suspenseful action film starring Dennis Quaid as father of the ever eye-catching Jake Gyllenhaal features the all too familiar topic of debate: global climate change. Though sometimes hitting somewhat too close to home, the awe inspiring cinematic wonders of watching the world freezing instantaneously is not to be passed up in this story that inspires hope and perseverance even in the bleakest of times.

An average movie

5 years later, Roland Emmerich would direct the similar '2012' but between those 2 movies, I'd rather have this one. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from it but eventually I thought it was not bad at all. Basically, like all disaster movies, the story was rather preposterous but it is inherent to the genre and I thought the special effects were this time pretty cool and rather convincing (compared to '2012' which was so over the top, you could almost call this movie a realistic flick...). Another thing I really enjoyed was the cast (Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Emmy Rossum, Ian Holm) as they all delivered some decent performances and, for once, it was also interesting to see a disaster flick revolving around a small group of characters, instead of a big group which is usuallly the case in this genre. I guess, the only issue I had with this flick is that the story was too pedestrian, predictable and didn't add much to the formula. Still, it remains a very well made and entertaining disaster movie, probably one of my favorites in this genre and it is definitely worth a look.

The Day After Tomorrow review

Spare Us, O Lord, From Movies Like This

Posted : 12 years, 8 months ago on 25 August 2011 08:58

This movie is...yeah. No. Why? Well...let's look at the checklist. Special effects, check. Extra special effects, check. Super-special special effects, with glitter and icing on top, check. But what about, say, plot? Or character development? Realistic sequence of events? No? What about two out of three? Or one out of three--anything? No? Damn.

Oh, and this was the guy who made "Stargate", the movie, as well-- that explains alot, I think.

(5/10)

The Day After Tomorrow review

What would happen if the world got so warm that the ice shelves of Antartica broke off, the glaciers melted and the oceans became less salty? Why the whole Northen hemmispher would plunge into an immediate iceage of course.
But don't worry, Spiderman comes to the rescue. None the less, I have enjoyed this movie several times. The special effects are spectacilar. The cast is enjoyable and the dialogue is not so bad that you would loose your popcorn.
This is escapism at its best.

The Day After tomorrow

The Day After Tomorrow is a fun movie to watch only because of the special effects. Kind of cool to see how they portrayed what LA and New York would look like after the major weather portrayed.
However, I'm going to have to disagree with the previous reviewers and say that Dennis Quaid is one of the worst actors I've ever seen! I literally was laughing at him and his eye rolling each time he was on camera.
The story was crap as well.
enough said.

suspension of disbelief

Posted : 16 years, 9 months ago on 30 July 2007 03:56

"Nowadays" between New York and Los Angeles. A climatologist (Dennis Quaid) needs to find a way to save "the world" from global warming. His son (Jake Gyllenhaal) is hiding with a group of friends in the New York Public Library and is experiencing first-hand the major weather changes.

Special effects were all wonderful. I was only disappointed in the wolves: they did not look real at all.

Keep in mind when watching this movie that it requires a *lot* of suspension of disbelief. Most of what happens is beyond belief and rather predictable.

That said, it is still enjoyable entertainment, and Dennis Quaid proves that he is an excellent actor. Gyllenhaal is not the best, but the casting was decent enough for this movie.

Pure Hollywood entertainment. What else can one expect from a director like Roland Emmerich.

Guilty Pleasure

Yes, I realize that distances the characters cross are crazy, but I don't care. Yes, I realize that this would never happen, but I don't care. I was highly entertained by this movie. I loved the awesome special effects. I think Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal are wonderful actors. This was a good movie.
