The Conversation review

Posted : 6 years, 6 months ago on 11 November 2017 12:09

It is a classic movie. That means everybody recommends it and nobody watches it. Hehe, ... sorry.

But it is true, the movie is hard to get into. It is slow, but only if you judge it by modern Marvel-like movies. It is more about creating a portrait of the man- Mr.Caul rather than some great event. I was about to drop it halfway, but then I read Coppola loved this film and pursued on. The ending was Brilliant!

So please be patient and you'll remember this movie fondly for many years to come.

A classic

To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. It is apparently Francis Ford Coppola's personal favorite of his movies. Eventually, the only reason this movie didn’t get the love it deserved was probably the fact that Coppola was really on fire in the 70’s and all his movies turned out to be some huge masterpieces (‘The Godfather’, ‘The Godfather: Part II’, ‘Apocalypse Now’). Anyway, the whole thing was a raw and realistic feature, so much more spellbinding than the modern thrillers that we get nowadays. Indeed, for example, many years later, Tony Scott came up with ‘Enemy of State’ which was also focusing on some conspiracy theory, also starring Gene Hackman in a similar part, but even though it was fairly entertaining, most of it was seriously far-fetched and borderline ridiculous. In this movie, every thing was actually likely to happen (for example, they used in this movie the very same surveillance and wire-tapping equipment that members of the Nixon Administration used to spy on political opponents prior to the Watergate scandal) which made the whole thing much more fascinating to behold. Anyway, to conclude, it is simply one of the best thrillers ever made and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are interested in Francis Ford Coppola's work.

A paranoid detective journey into the world of sound and conversations. Possibly the most chilling films ever made in the 70s 'conspiracy theory' genre. The Conversation frightens with its grim, gripping view of the surveillance world.

The Director of a large anonymous corporation hires surveillance expert Harry Caul to record a young couple's private conversation. The film opens with Caul and assistants eavesdropping the said exchange in a busy square with an assortment of concealed mics.

Haunted by the bloody consequences of an earlier assignment, Caul becomes convinced that his ingenious invasions of privacy will put the young couple's lives at risk. The tapes contain the phrase "He'd kill us if he had the chance", and it is this which Harry obsesses over. Finally, in taking action to prevent further bloodshed, he shatters his own deeply private world.
