One word- BEAUTIFUL!

Posted : 1 year, 11 months ago on 30 May 2022 10:39

I have this anime on DVD, and for me it is just stunning. i have also enjoyed Princess Mononoke and Castle of Cagliostro, but what makes this movie stand out for me is that it is so relaxing to watch.True, it is one of the weaker Ghibli efforts, but I think some of the criticisms are a little unfair. The only problem is that it is a little too short, only 75 minutes, but you'll love it anyway. the animation is beautiful, some lovely colours in the ballroom scene. The music was gorgeous, and being a singer I look out for this in every movie. The storyline while simple, is surprisingly well told, and is also fast-moving. The voice talents is where I have to make a confession. I have only watched the version with the English voices, which were a delight. Anne Hathaway voices Haru wonderfully, and there was a lot of screaming, I noticed. Likewise with Cary Elwes as the Baron, who was a sheer delight as the Baron, just perfect for the character. Peter Boyle and Elliot Gould were really funny, and their tongue-in-cheek dialogue was just inspirational. The Cat king isn't Tim Curry's finest voice over, but he was still delightful and at least he kept me entertained. All in all, a beautiful and charming fantasy film, that is recommended. 9/10. An average movie

Since 'Spirited away' is one of my favorite animated movies, whenever I get the opportunity to watch another Studio Ghibli production, I don't miss it. This time, it was not directed by the great Hayao Miyazaki but by Hiroyuki Morita which I had never heard of before but it is understandable since he never directed another movie before or after this feature. Anyway, as usual with Studio Ghibli, the animation was pretty gorgeous but, honestly, I wasn't really blown away by the story. I mean, it was nice, charming and all but, in my opinion, the target audience was, this time, obviously the young children so when I hear people saying that it is great for grown ups, I tend to respectfully disagree with them. Of course, at the end of the day, it remains a matter of taste and some might think it is a great flick but, personally, I thought it was not bad at all but I was still rather bored during the whole thing. To conclude, it is a decent animated movie with some gorgeous animation and an average story but it is still definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Wonderful fantasy, suitable for family v

As far as my understanding goes, The Cat Returns is a sort-of-sequel/spin-off to an earlier Studio Ghibli film called Whisper of the Heart, which I have yet to see but now want to.

It is a lovely little film which I think would sit well with another, though much earlier, Ghibli film My Neighbor Totoro as they are both very much family fantasy films that have wonderful stories. I loved the characters in this and recommend the Japanese voice cast with English subtitles as even though I have not heard the English cast, the originals fit very well indeed.

A great film, recommended for anime and Ghibli fans and a good introduction for children into the genre.
