Great fun from the Addams Family!

Posted : 1 year, 9 months ago on 10 August 2022 05:13

Well, I finally managed to write a review on this, and I have to say, I like this a lot. I do think Values is marginally better, but both are solid entertainment, two good examples of films, driven by character not plot(though there was a very good one in both films). Like Values, the rating is too low, why? My only criticism, is that I don't like the rap song over the end credits at all. Apart from that, it had spirited direction, great incidental music, great performances, and a gem of a black humour filled script.

The plot is simple but grabs the attention of adults, as young children might not understand it. The script is witty, dark and very funny, something that Reunion forgot to add to the proceedings. Barry Sonnenfield directs with spirit and enthusiasm, but it's the performances that I was most impressed with.

Raul Julia and Angelica Huston were perfect as Gomez and Morticia, and I was sure that Tim Curry and Daryl Hannah would have been, had they a half-decent script and director to work with.(alas!) Christopher Lloyd was great fun as Fester, but the performance of Christina Ricci steals the film. Everyone else deserves a mention.

In conclusion, a well-done and inventive film, with a 9/10 from me! Bethany Cox

A good movie

To start with, I have never seen the TV-show so I can't say if it is a good adaptation. All I can say is that, when it was released, there was a pretty good buzz around this flick, it was eventually a success and I really enjoyed it back then when I was a kid. No so long ago I rewatched it with my step-son and, again, I really enjoyed it. Once again, I really enjoyed the tone, the look of the whole thing and the characters were just perfectly cast (Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Christina Ricci). Indeed, all the actors involved gave some pretty good performances, enjoyable for kids and adults. The only weak point would be the story since there was actually no real plot and it tends to drag along at some points. I still think it was a rather impressive directing debut for Barry Sonnenfeld who originally started as a cinematographer for the Coen brothers for their first 3 movies. It is rather surprising that he would choose such a rather big project to start with but it was a success and Sonnefeld continued pretty well with 'Get Shorty' and 'Men in Black'. However, ever since 'Wild Wild West' was a total critical disaster, it seems that his directing career never really recovered. Anyway, coming back to his directing debut, in my opinion, the whole thing is actually pretty funny and entertaining and it is definitely worth a look.

Too many gags?

Cute movie, with all the references you want to the tv series you remember. And with an updated feeling, that makes it a little edgier and hipper. Unfortunately all these gags can get in the way. The plot was pretty thin, and took forever to get anywhere. The characters are good, and I eventually became quite attached to them. Didn't hold up well to a second viewing, although there are some great quotes that still remain hysterically funny.
