Sweet Home Alabama review

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 28 March 2022 04:28

"Sweet Home Alabama" was a nice pleasant romantic comedy. What made this film I think was the performance of Resse Witherspoon, her character starts off unlikeable, but in the latter half of the film we see a change of heart to her being more sympathetic. Witherspoon played her very convincingly, being her usual likable self, and she is amiably supported by Patrick Dempsey, Candice Bergen and Josh Lucas. There is also a nice soundtrack, good direction, beautiful scenery and good cinematography. While essentially a pleasant film, the film is let down by some sluggish pacing and a slow and sometimes predictable story that meanders at the end. Also one or two characters are a little clichéd. In conclusion, this is not perfect by all means but it is worth watching and pleasant. 6/10 Bethany Cox

An average movie

I have just came across an article in the Guardian about the fact that Reese Witherspoon, for the 2nd time in a row, was in the top Forbes list of overpaid actors, once again at the 3rd place. So, it seems that she is not having the greatest success in her career right now but, back in 2002 when she made this romantic-comedy, she was a really hot item. Indeed, a year before, she showed up in ‘Legally Blonde’, a movie with a really lame concept which turned out to be actually decent. It was a huge box-office and she joined the A list, a spot she has never left ever since. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I have to admit it, Witherspoon was really charming and whimsical and she had a good chemistry with Josh Lucas (this guy was supposed to become the next Brad Pitt, what happened to him actually?!?) but the plot was not really good, I’m afraid. Basically, it is one of those romantic-comedies based on a lie and it was just really underwhelming. I mean, it is a gimmick they keep using but, boy, it is always tedious and cringe-inducing. To conclude, even though the whole thing was watchable, it was a rather disappointing romantic-comedy and I don’t think it is really worth a look.

While completely predictable, this is a sweet and entertaining movie. If you put your brain on hold and watch it for what it is, it is quite enjoyable. The story is decent; the acting, also decent. I don't know that I will watch this movie more than once or twice in my life, but it was one I don't regret seeing.
