An average movie

Posted : 9 years, 11 months ago on 17 May 2014 05:44

Honestly, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since there was a pretty cool cast, I was quite eager to check it out. I mean, indeed, check this out : Talulah Riley, Rupert Everett, Jodie Whittaker, Gemma Arterton, Juno Temple, Tamsin Egerton, Lily Cole, Russell Brand, Lena Headey, Toby Jones, Colin Firth, Mischa Barton and Stephen Fry! That was neat to see all these familiar faces but, honestly, the movie was not really good I’m afraid. Basically, it is a rather commercial movie which pretends to be alternative and sarcastic but it wasn’t really convincing. I mean, who you go in any room of the school, you don’t believe that any of those wild girls are responsible for this rampage but it is obvious that you get to see the result of some rather elaborate set-dressing. There were two actors who got the right tone : Russell Brand who unfortunately didn’t have much to do and Rupert Everett who once again really stole the show. The worst might have been Colin Firth as he gave a straight and very dry performance but it just didn’t work. To conclude, even though the whole thing really had some potential, it was a rather average flick and I don’t think it is really worth a look.

St Trinian's review

Posted : 16 years ago on 25 April 2008 09:52

When I heard that the remake of St Trinians was going to be a 'revamp' for the 21st century...I cringed.

Much luck though; it has not been cheapened or ruined at all. The same tongue in cheekiness is there, in the same camp Ealing studios style...the plot has been changed to include 'Chavs' and 'Emos' to incorporate the modern british school mentality.

Rupert Everett made sure the film stayed tongue-in-cheek with his drag act of the headmistress Miss Fritton, not played wackily or over the top; but as a slightly essentric, middle class spinster.

The girls are still up to their old tricks, fermenting their own alcohol, cheating at hocky and plotting a heist.

I definately recommend this film; it might be a bit too british in places for the foreign to grab, it is very colloquial in places. In my opinion though it is the best British film made in a very long time; and for once it was actually British, lottery funded, Ealing studios and no token american in it for sales.
