Spaceballs review

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 17 March 2022 03:49

I don't think that this is one of Mel Brooks' finest hours, but it was reasonably entertaining, though as far as Brooks' films go The Producers and Young Frankenstein are more entertaining and I think more watchable. The story is very thin, the pacing is somewhat uneven feeling rushed or draggy, the gags are hit and miss(in the timing some of the time as it is all very manic humour wise) and there are some very silly and unfunny puns scattered in the course of the film. However, the visuals are great, the music is quirky and some gags are funny especially the speed scene which was both ludicrous and hilarious and Spaceballs has a great cast. It is always a delight to see Mel Brooks(who also directs decently), John Candy, Rick Moranis(who gets the best moments) and Bill Pullman, and they all give good performances. Overall, noisy and uneven, but it is entertaining thanks to the cast. 6/10 Bethany Cox

Spaceballs the Review

Posted : 11 years ago on 9 April 2013 09:45

Out of all of the Mel Brooks movies, Spaceballs, a parody of the original Star Wars trilogy, would have to be my personal favorite. Casting fresher faces for most of the main characters was a nice touch.

I found those characters to be quite lovable, much like the Star Wars characters, well, before Jar-Jar Binks was conceived in George Lucas' crazy brain. The one character that entertains me the most is Dark Helmet, naturally. No matter how intimidating Helmet tries to be, he's still the ego-maniacal man-child that is the butt of a lot of jokes.

The gags are so funny that they border on cartoonish, such as when Lone Star learns to master the power of the Schwartz by lifting the giant Yogurt statue. Barf is impressed with Lone Star, who gets distracted and accidentally drops the statue on Barf's foot, which gets flattened in a cartoon-y manner. If you liked Star Wars, then you'll like this.

My rating: 8/10

An average movie

From all the movies directed by Mel Brooks that I have seen so far (I’m missing only ‘Dracula: Dead and Loving It', ‘High Anxiety’ and ‘Silent Movie’), this one was probably the most disappointing one. I mean, sure, it wasn’t the worst I have seen from this director but, considering its stellar reputation,  I was expecting a lot from this movie. Indeed, it is probably one of the most popular comedies ever made and it is definitely a classic but, personally, I thought it was seriously underwhelming and I really couldn’t see what was so great about the damned thing. I mean, sure, the concept was interesting and it was really smart to parody the Star Wars franchise but, at the end of the day, there were just a few decent jokes. Seriously, I had to smile a few times during the whole thing but I never thought that it was actually hilarious. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who wasn’t really impressed by the whole thing and Roger Ebert didn’t really care for it either. To conclude, even though it wasn’t really awful, I really didn’t like it much but, if you are a fan of the genre, there is a fair chance that you might end up enjoying it more than I did.

"I'm a Mog - half man, half dog."

Spaceballs was the first Mel Brooks film I ever saw and it's long been one of my favourite parodies out there. Even just thinking about some of the lines in this movie makes me giggle. I grew up on the kind of movies Spaceballs is spoofing and I think that makes it even funnier. As the saying goes - it's funny 'cause it's TRUE! It amazes me how many laughs can be squeezed out of Spaceballs.

Spaceballs: The Review!

Posted : 16 years, 1 month ago on 27 March 2008 08:00

Mel Brooks has been making movies and parodies since the 60's and I've seen a lot of them and Spaceballs is the best.

The story is that the leaders of planet Spaceball have wasted all their air and extorting all the air from their neighboring planet of Druidia. And to do so by kidnapping the princess of the planet, Princess Vespa. But she is rescued by Captain Lone Starr, who was hired by her father, before the Spaceballs capture her. And the rest of the movie has Lone Starr, Princess Vespa, her droid Dot Matrix, and Lone Starr's mawg, half man, half dog partner Barf trying to keep away from the Spaceballs and foil their plans.

The movie takes a lot of references from Star Wars but also takes a lot from other sci-fi and blockbuster films from around the time, like Star Trek, Alien, The Wizard of Oz, Rambo, and even Dumbo.

Acting in the movie is great for each character is awesome spoofs of the characters they're parodying.

The writing in this film is awesome in taking those references making some truly hilarious scenes and rememberable quotes that still make me laugh.

Personally I've seen this movie a couple dozen times... okay a couple hundred times and can recite most of the lines my heart and every time I see it I can still laugh at the jokes and situations and still is a treat to watch.
