Hell of a Way to End a Partnership.

Posted : 14 years, 9 months ago on 20 July 2009 04:12

THE film from a comic. Delivered from two brilliant minds, comic novelist Frank Miller and Legend Robert Rodriguez team up to take this comic off the pages and put it up on the silver screen. Why I didn't see this movie in the theatres is beyond me; in fact id like to go back in time to when i was at a movie i didnt really want to see and kick myself in the nuts JUST before i bought the tickets. Summing up the dark nights of an area just like every other city in the world; a few events being told, narrated, and actually tied into one another by the film's end. Every tale, though they take a dive in their own direction bring you back to that one bar, or driving down that one strip; showing how busy and how dangerous a single city can be. Anything where law is not the iron fist of what it is today gets me excited; and the town where hookers rule as killers who can defend themselves is an awesome idea which spawn quite a few violent death scenes that more than treat the eye. I didn't quite catch why some blood was white or yellow and some blood was red as usual; me and the Mrs. guessed maybe in some scenes you weren't able to see the slpatter on dark clothes or skin, both colors made their point. Thumbs up on Every part in this film; every cast member brought out their character as if it was their freaking destiny. See this film... Yesterday!!

Marv: I had to fight some cops.
Lucille: Oh, that's lovely. You didn't happen to kill any of them, did you?
Marv: Nah, I don't think so, but they know they been in a fight, that's for sure.

MASTERPIECE!!!

'Sin City' is, in my opinion, one of the best movies of 2005. The film is an adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novels (who also guest co-directed), and the result is a very stylishly shot, with a perfect cast, film noir with a faultless script.

Prior to viewing this film I had no knowledge of the graphic novels, but the wave of great reviews it received was the thing that urged me to see it. Before viewing I had no idea what to expect, but as the film started I could not take my eyes away from the screen and I was instantly hooked. Film noir isn't my thing, but the excellent visuals made me forget completely that this was film noir and I just laid back and enjoyed the brilliant narration by the central characters while watching a blood-bath of a movie. The film is exceedingly gory, with lots of limbs being sliced off and people getting blown to bits (although I usually abhor violence in movies), but it was the intelligent script, with the inventive visuals and classy construction that really made this a winner!

The film is made up of many stories, but all are connected in some aspect and they are all set inside the comic book world of Sin City; a world of low-lifes, pimps, hookers and whores that spill onto the big screen in a pool of red, white and yellow blood. The first tale is the tale of Hartigan (Willis) - a soon-to-be ex-cop whoโ€™s pushing 60. He's been working on tracking a child rapist named Roark (Stahl). Roark has recently kidnapped an 11-year-old girl named Nancy (played by Vega when at age 11) and Hartigan makes it his task to find Roark and save Nancy. After saving Nancy, Hartigan was shot many times and ends up in hospital, followed by gaol. When finally released he goes to find Nancy (now played by Alba), but things go wrong. The second tale is of Marv, a thug. After sleeping with a hooker who gets killed, Marv vows revenge and stumbles across cannibal Kevin (Wood). The final story is of Dwight (Owen, in a brilliant performance) who assists the hookers of Sin City in killing a corrupt cop named Jackie Boy (Del Toro) who has a penchant for violence.

The three stories are taken from the pages of Miller's graphic novels and the transformation works astoundingly well! This is one of those films you must see because it's too brilliant to miss! If you haven't yet seen it - do so!

What Happens In Sin City, Stays In Sin City

The weird thing about this movie is that the male lead characters are all practically the same guy.
And the individual stories don't seem to stray too off far from each other or from a theme that we've all seen on the big screen millions of times before.
The thing is, the visuals on this thing are so goddamn striking that, for me at least, it almost felt like I was watching a much more unique set of plotlines than was actually being told.
Rather than trying to bring the Sin City graphic novel into movie "reel life", it seemed almost like this was more an exercise to bringing reel life into the Sin City comicbook. That the actors weren't trying to portray comicbook characters as much as they were trying to integrate their 3-D physicality into 2-D flat-figured Frank Miller drawings (as was most evident with the make-up jobs on Marv & the Yellow Man.

I know that there are some people who criticized the simplicity & graphic "pointlessness" of this movie, but it's art direction was so full of energy & depth ( for my visual senses, at least) that I couldn't keep my eyes off the screen & found myself truly embedded in the illusion that I was watching something original.

Poonany's Thoughts

This is an amazing film and I would recommend it to everybody. Set in black and white with splashes of colour this film tells Three overlapping stories.

What I will say is if you watch five minutes and don't really think you are enjoying it then carry on because trust me after about fifteen minutes you will be as hooked as I was.

The way the film is shot is brilliantly different and the stories are all as compelling as each other. The splashes of colour bring a vividness to the film which many films fail because of.

What I would say though is this film is quite gory so be careful who you are watching it with. In my opinion it is an amazing film.

Sin City review

I haven't watched this film in about a year so my rating is based on what I remember now.

All Three Protagonists earned my respect and so I geuninely cared for their causes. This means a lot because I don't like Mickey Rourke but I feel his performance as Marv was perfect. I'm not a big fan of voiceovers but I felt this story needed one seeing as it is comic-basis.

I love the use of colour aswell, only unique things get a colour other than B&W which highlights importance and relevance. I was also enticed by the wardrobe of the heroes. Looks like a long trench coat is my next destination.

ultimate coolness

Movies don't get any cooler than this. The storylines are riveting, the dialog is perfect, the violence is off the scale, and the the blend of real actors with black & white effects, a touch of color where needed, and comic book animated backgrounds is mesmirizing to watch and absolutely beautiful.

The story is actually 4 short stories, and they all very loosely interconnect. The first story is very short, starring Josh Hartnett, a ladies man who seduces and kills women. By itself, it just sets the tone of the movie, but it really seems way too short, until you see how it wraps up the very end of the movie. Next, you have the story of Hartingan who saves little girl Nancy, from a rapist, but get falsely imprisoned and does everything to protect her. When he gets out, the story takes a wicked turn as the rapist is still at large, horribly disfigured, and hell-bent on revenge against both Harting and Nancy, who is now 18 and working as a stripper.

There is also the story of Marv, played by Rourke. Marv is a brute beastly man, and his only love is a prostitute name Goldie. One morning, he wakes up and finds Goldie dead. Someone killed her and framed Marv, and the police are after him. Its one of the longest stories in the film. And there's also the story of an incident between a corrupt cop and prosititutes, which threatens to shatter the peace in the city and cause full out war.

On the DVD, you can view the stories seperately, but best way is to watch the film in its original way, with the movie progressing by jumping from one story line to another.
