A good movie

Posted : 7 years, 2 months ago on 19 February 2017 07:40

Since I'm a huge of fan of Martin Scorsese, of course, I was really eager to check this flick but there were a couple of things that worried me about this project. First of all, even though Scorsese had announced that he will direct this movie, he kept pushing it indefinitely to release something else and, when it seemed that he would finally get it done, I had the feeling that it was partially because he was contractually obligated and also to finally getting done with it. On top of that, it wasn't exactly a huge critical success when it was released so, to be honest, I had lowered my expectations and I thought it might turn out to be a minor effort for this great master. Well, even though it was definitely one of his least accessible movies, the damned thing was actually quite spellbinding to behold. The fact that I have always been fascinated by the subject of religion certainly did help and I thought that this movie was a really interesting study on faith and on how, at the same time, it can be completely misguided but also really inspiring. With this movie, you can pretty much feel how conflicted Scorsese will always be towards the Catholic church even though you might wonder if almost 3 hours were really necessary for this journey. To conclude, even though it won't be one of his best movies, I'm amazed by how much it touched me and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested by this subject or by Martin Scorsese's work.

Silence review

Notes:
*We play this at my theater so I have the chance to go see it.
*The cast is an interesting one except for Ciaran Hinds who I just can't stand lol.
*This is a Martin Scorsese film so I expect good things to happen.
*I have heard some people don't like it though, but then again people these days want constant action.
*This is co-written by Jay Cocks who also wrote on Gangs of New York with Scorsese.
*Apparently Japan had adapted the book this is based on in 1971 which I never knew until now.
*Anyways let's see if this is a winner or not.

Pros:
*The story is very interesting itself.
*The acting was quite excellent as well.
*You can tell that this was more about telling the story than just making it insane to entertain the easily distracted.

Cons:
*It feels a bit drawn out.
*To be honest it can get boring at times as well.

Verdict:
It is a very interesting look at the history of Christianity and Japan. The acting, story, and directing are all really well done. It's a bit long and drawn out, but it is a story that I think people should look at.
