Showgirls review

(Mu) This is special being standard, but Verhoeven goes for extreme sex and competition in high dramatic Las Vegas; there's elocuent harshness in each character encounter. Gina Gershon is far better than the main character...

Showgirls is one of those trashy chick-flicks that you invite your college girlfriends over to your house accompanied with jeroboams of wine and champagne. Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley) hitchhikes to Las Vegas where she dreams of becoming an exotic dancer at Stardust Resort. There, she goes through other adventures such as forming a friendship with Molly (Gina Ravera), performing pole dances at the Cheetah, making an unlikely friend with Stardust Goddess Cristel Connors (Gina Gershon), having periods during dance rehearsal, weird crazy sex with Zach Carey (Kyle MacLachlan), pushing Cristel down the stairs, meeting Andrew Carver (William Shockley), Molly’s rape and assault, and beating up Andrew Carver. I know this is a movie that continues to show midnight screenings at cult theatres, similar to The Rocky Horror Picture Show or The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. But unlike those two shows where they were entertainingly campy and silly, Showgirls does not have that same vibe. Don’t get me wrong, it has its unintentionally funny moments, mostly from Berkley’s legendary acting caliber. But, the pacing is slow, the writing is exploitive and sexist, certain plot threads go nowhere while others came out of nowhere, and we learn nothing about Nomi (or should I say Polly). All we know is that her parents died in a homicide/suicide, she has an incredible nationwide criminal record and has run away from a foster home in Oakland. However, we know nothing about what inspired her to her career, where she was born, what her childhood was like, how her parent’s deaths affected her psychologically or how old she was when they died. I want to say Showgirls is so bad it’s good, but, needless to say, it is nothing but a sleazy soap opera.

Big budget production married to soft core pornography. As a drama, this is mediocre though not the worst movie I've ever seen. As pornography, it's a failure unless you you find the outrageous campiness to be titillating. On the whole, probably not worth your time either way.

A very bad movie

Tomorrow, I’m planning to watch ‘You don’t Nomi’, so I thought I might as well re-watch this movie, especially since it has been ages since I first saw it. Well, after all these years, even if this movie now belongs to the stuff of legend, to be honest, it is still pretty bad though. I mean, it is basically a rather lame and boring erotic B feature, no more and no less than that. Indeed, the first issue I had was that, beside the fact that the story was terribly derivative, they never really settled for a specific tone. Basically, it was never really glamourous or really gritty or really sleazy. Of course, Paul Verhoeven argued that it was supposed to be some kind of satire but, even from this angle, it was never convincing whatsoever. Then, another major issue was the main character who was just really lame. Sure, I have to admit that Elizabeth Berkley, who was only in her early 20's back then, looked really hot but her character was actually more cringe-inducing than really entertaining. Eventually, years later, Verhoeven would take the blame and said that he pushed Berkley to deliver such a ‘performance’ but I still think she never managed to make her character intriguing or entertaining whatsoever. To make things worse, all the other characters involved were not much better at all. For some reason, there was also a completely random rape scene towards the end which had really nothing to do with the rest of the movie. Anyway, for Berkley, her career was pretty much ruined from the start but, to be honest, if she had been really talented, she would have made a come-back at some point. For Verhoeven, this movie would be the beginning of the end and, nowadays, he left the US and he was back making movies in the Netherlands (where he managed to make only one movie after all). Anyway, to conclude, this flick is still a train wreck and you should watch it only if you are curious to see how bad it actually is.

No matter what anyone says this will forever be my favorite movie of all time. The sheer audacity of this film makes it an immediate cult classic and a misunderstood gem. Essentially a loose remake of All About Eve, Showgirls sets out to tell a fairly straight-forward tale of a woman on a quest to rise above her previous station in life and the (correct) assumptions made of her due to her appearance. The over the top gyrating and extreme nudity must follow due to the setting and story being told. The nudity could seem gratuitous in any other director's film, but this is Paul Verhoeven so it is par for the course. I fully admit the movie is "bad" but one can love a bad movie as long as one admits it is bad but can love it in spite of said badness. With that in mind, I repeat that this will forever be my favorite movie of all time.

ShowGirls which is meant to show us what living in Las Vegas and being a showgirl is really like. Is more of a Melo-dramtic look at vegas and life itself and what happens when your a pretty stripper.Elizabeth Berkley plays Nomi Malone a ditsy blonde with a tragic past (which is never really revealed).Everyone who even gets a glance and Nomi suddenly is awestruck with the fact that she is gorgeous. which needless to say is what the whole movie is about. When Nomi gets noticed by Cristal Connors(Gina Gershon), Nomi becomes a ShowGirl and over a short length of time begins to hate Cristal.then Nomi has the feeling she has to show up Cristal. showgirls is a dramatic yet, funny film that Co-stars Kyle Maclachlan, Robert Davi and Glenn plummer.
