Sex and Lucia (2001) Reviews

It was one of the first movies starring Paz Vega and after this flick, her career really took off. A year later, she would work with Pedro Almodovar (they would make only 1 movie together) and 3 years later, she would make a first US production (‘Spanglish’) but her career eventually never managed to be as successful as Penélope Cruz. Concerning the director, Julio Medem, even though he seems to have a pretty solid reputation , I have never seen anything else directed by this guy but I will sure do whenever I get the opportunity. Indeed, even though I have a lot of respect for Almodovar’s work, I usually have a hard time to connect with his eccentric characters. With Medem, the characters are just as complex but I was more able to connect with them and there was something really intriguing about them and what they were going through. There was also a lot of talk about the rather explicit sex scenes but they fit really well with the rest of the story so they didn’t bother me. Anyway, it is a very profound and emotional drama, I really loved it and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Spanish movies.
