An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 12 months ago on 4 June 2011 02:51

Nowadays, I watch movies mostly with Netflix and Popcorn Time and, as a result, I have become slightly more picky about what I watch. In the past, I used to watch some really random stuff just because there were a few decent actors involved and this movie was a perfect example. Indeed, I had really had no idea what what to expect from this flick but since I really have a weak spot for  Danny Devito and Kathy Bates, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I think that those 2 actors are both really underrated but even them couldn't save the damned thing… Seriously, the story was just really  average, it was not original at all and completely predictable. At least, I have to admit that Neve Campbell is a very charming actress but she was actually rather weak here. Indeed,  she played it way too seriously when all the other actors were over-the-top and completely satirical. Above all, the main character and his adoptive parents were rather despicable and they made the whole thing rather painfull to watch. Anyway, to conclude, I have seen worse movies in my life but it doesn't mean this one was worth a look.

well... not all *that* bad

Raised by upper-class parents (Herrmann and Baranski), Richard Clayton (Livingston) is an author writing books on anger management and soon to marry Ellen (Neve Campbell). Unfortunately, his brother Mitchell tells him on a night he's had one too many, that he, Richard, was adopted! So Richard decides to find his real parents, who turn out to be obnoxious trailer-park clowns (De Vito and Bates). But no matter who you are or where you are from, you can't change your (real) parents, and you certainly can't choose them... or can you?

I honestly always have a hard time with comedies in general, but American comedies are in my opinion some of the worst ever. This movie isn't the worst ever, but it's not the best either. It certainly has its moments, and its funny lines; however it has a lot of cliches and way too many predictable references to hicks.

Still enjoyable for the actors' performances. A great cast. And all in all, it's not all *that* bad.

If you like silly goofy comedies, then this is for you.
