A good movie

To be honest, I wasnโ€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Eva Green, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, it is always neat to see Green showing up in a French movie as it shows how versatile she is. In fact, she spoke at least 4 languages in this movie. Concerning the movie itself, I really liked the sober, even clinical, approach they took to deal with space exploration. In fact, it was so realistic that you could barely call it science-fiction. On top of that, Eva Green gave here a really solid and convincing performance. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if it was such a great idea to focus on the main character's struggle to leave her daughter behind. In fact, what I learned from this movie is that, if your dream would be to go to space for at least one year or even longer, in my opinion, you should seriously reconsider if you want to have some children. The fact that you are a man or a woman shouldn't matter but that wasn't the message conveyed by this movie. According to this movie, only this woman and not her male colleague faced this struggle and, even if it was definitely not intentional, I thought this approach was actually rather sexist. I mean, pretty much ever since there has been some astronauts and cosmonauts, these men had left behind their children but it never seemed a traumatic experience for them or their children. Towards the end, she also did violate so many rules so she could be one last time with her kid and, while it did create suddenly a thriller-like suspense, it did feel completely out of tone with the rest of the movie. On top of that, it didn't fit at all with this character who worked so hard to reach this goal and it seemed really unlikely that she would ruin everything on such an impulsive action. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you want to see something really realistic about space exploration.
