Pom Poko Reviews

Pompoko is a touch too long, but it is still a very good film with an environmentalist message that is quite hard-hitting yet never feels overplayed. For Ghibli, it is quite ambitious and quite different, this is not a bad thing at all, quite the contrary, and while not their best it has the elements that makes their films so pleasing. The animation is once again stunning, and the music is haunting, beautiful and quite evocative. The dialogue is good on the whole, perhaps the odd stilted moment but it is thought-provoking and intelligent, while the story and characters are engaging enough and the voice work as always is excellent. Not a classic, but definitely worth a look. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Un filme con conceptos sumamente interesantes y elementos que pudieron haber desarrollado un clásico de la animación, sin embargo, hay varios puntos en Pom Poko que hacen que no sea una buena película.
Primeramente, la película gasta demasiado tiempo en cosas cotidianas y rutinas que se vuelven repetitivas, como los son los mapaches asustando a los humanos. Sí, lo entiendo, los mapaches asustan a los humanos, no necesito media película de montajes de eso, que media película es una hora.
También la película es algo incongruente en muchos aspectos. Se entienden como poderes de los mapaches que pueden convertirse en varios elementos y después se establece que también pueden volverse invisibles. Sin embargo, al final de la película hacen aparecer objetos de la nada, sin previo establecimiento y como simple conveniencia argumental. A parte, en Pom Poko los mapaches tienen algo de inteligencia, por lo que no veo el modo en como algunos mapaches fueron tan tontos como para ser atropellados por autos en las calles de la ciudad y no fijarse en los autos ni en su entorno. Estamos hablando de una película en la que los mapaches pueden hacerse pasar como humanos y en donde aprenden sus costumbres y al final unos mapaches hasta obtienen trabajo, siendo así, que los mapaches pueden hacer todo eso, sigo sin comprender como es que algunos mapaches fueron tan tontos como para no darse cuenta de que las calles son peligrosas.
A parte de esto, resulta que los mapaches saben hablar japonés, ¿de dónde sacaron ese conocimiento? ¿cómo es que aun con este conocimiento siguen habiendo mapaches que mueren por no fijarse en un trailer gigante pasando en frente de él? mala escritura.
Ninguno de los personajes está bien detallado y si bien hay unos con personalidades bien definidas, la película gasta tanto tiempo en sus momentos de basura repetitiva de espantar humanos, que los personajes me acaban importando un comino.
Interesantes conceptos y como es normal para Ghibli, bonita animación, pero ya, es todo, no se profundiza en nada, por ende no me importa nada.

I think it had very pretty animations, just for the record I am a huge fan of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. So already I had high hopes for this film. And I must say it is no way one of Ghibli's best, and I think you may have guessed that by the IMBD mark maybe. But even if the any Ghibli movie PLOT doesn't appeal to you, you still have that beautiful animation with all sorts of amazing stories behind, so if Ghibli fails to grab you're attention with the plot, it will sure grab by its visual beauty, I mean this wasn't a bad movie or anything, just kind of average, but as I'm such a Studio Ghibli fan I loved pretty much anyway. But now just a bit on the plot, the characters and the situation; Well it's just really weird, I mean where'd the idea of shape shifting raccoons come from anyway!? That's just very very strange. It's also quite sad as the racoon's habitat is being destroyed by Japanese humans so, not very nice. Another you must must keep in mind is that Hayao Miyazaki actually didn't direct this movie, nor did his son, some guy named Isao Takahata did, he's apparently a long time friend of master Miyazaki. Anyway, what I mean is that everything Miyazaki himself directed churned out to be absolutely mind gripping and stunning visual beauty, and they are just two things you desperately need while watching anything; and that's what Studio Ghibli has.

I'd recommend this to anyone who is interested and loves or loved Studio Ghibli's work and if you are planning to watch the whole works of Ghibli, but do not, I repeat do NOT, expect any sort of masterpiece, in this case, I think it's for the visual beauty this time.
