Onward review

Posted : 4 years ago on 24 April 2020 08:23

In Onward, magic is like playing outside. Once technology came along. Everyone stopped going outside and going on quests.
Ian (Tom Holland) and his older brother Barley (Chris Pratt) discover a wand and a spell. That can bring their late father back for a day. Who Ian, never met.
Together they go on a quest to get a gem that together with the wand. Can bring back their dad. Thereโ€™s some road trip movie cliches. Whether itโ€™s a fairy version of a biker gang or not.
As soon you see the biker gang, you know there will be a fight with them. After someone does something to anger them. Like, the most cliche thing as to knock over their bikes for instance.
The film still tugs at your heart strings though and might get a tear or two out of you. It is touching and cute even if is not Pixarโ€™s best. Though more memorable than any Cars film.

A good movie

To be honest, when I first heard about this movie, I can't say I was really excited but since I have always been a big fan of Pixar, I was still quite eager to check it out. Eventually, it turned out to be some kind of mix of 'The Good Dinosaur' with 'Coco' which somehow ended up more like 'Frozen' so I'm afraid it was slightly derivative. Above all, I think the whole story was just too elaborate. Concerning the 'Frozen'-like ending, Pixar managed to land some major emotional punches like no one else can in the animation business though. However, this development, the fact that the whole thing was eventually about the bond between the two brothers, did seem to come a little bit out of nowhere. As a result,ย  even if it was quite powerful, it didn't feel really earned to be honest. Still, the animation was really nice, full of really neat details, and the whole thing was quite spectacular and simply just really fun to watch. On top of that, it is just so much more satisfying when Pixar comes up with something original than yet another sequel to one of their numerous classics which has been unfortunately their focus lately. Anyway, to conclude, even though it won't belong to the best work of Pixar, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
