Ocean's Thirteen review

Posted : 2 years ago on 28 March 2022 07:18

That's not to say all the Ocean movies are terrible. The first for me was very enjoyable, while the second while lazy and convoluted was okay. This film does have its moments, it is stylishly shot, has a brilliantly slick opening sequence and I liked the score. However, despite these good moments, it not only doesn't correct the mistakes of the previous time but makes more on the way. The direction is disappointingly lethargic, and the story is unevenly paced and convoluted. To me the script is not very good at all, in fact at worst some of it is pretty darn bad, while the film further suffers from being too long and too slow. Even the acting is disappointing, this is a great cast but some of them don't have much to do or don't know what to do with their material. Al Pacino comes off worst, he is a great actor but here he seems uncomfortable and uninterested. So overall, a disappointment really. I suppose it's worth a peak but I personally found it lazy and dull. 3/10 for being visually and technically accomplished. Bethany Cox

Shameless Cash Grab.

Before we get into this, let me give you an overall of the Trilogy, Ocean's Eleven was good, it was entertaining, you can't deny it, Ocean's Twelve had a very stupid premise but a good, sometimes average or below average execution, but it was entertaining, Ocean's Thirteen on the other hand was pure stupidity.

Let's start with the premise because in order for another sequel to exist, they're have to be a reason, so the premise is that Reuben Tishkoff (played by Elliott Gould) loses most of his money he invested in a Casino, so he experience a heart attack, and the doctor tell the Ocean team, that he may recover, if he felt like he had a family, so the Ocean team decide to rob a Casino to recover his money and make him feel better, so how is that for a premise?, i'll tell you, it was insultingly stupid, pretty much like Ocean's Twelve, when they had to rob a Casino to return the money they stole in the Ocean's Eleven to Terry Benedict.

The main problem with this movie is that it was too lazy, it was a sequel to cash in, not much else, everything about this movie from the writing to the screenplay to the directing was awful, Al Pacino plays a casino owner that the Ocean team trying to rob, and you know how in the Ocean Eleven, Andy Garcia was the Casino owner, he was in full control, knew everything about his Casino and he played a solid, very well written character, here on the other hand, it's the exact opposite, AL Pacino is fully incompetent, he plays a character that is so badly written, i felt like i was losing brain cells just by watching him, for example, he had no valid assistants, he had no idea about his Casino security, and he was there to fill the spot of the Casino owner and do nothing all the time, this is why this movie was lazy, they turned off this character because they were too lazy to work around it, i mean how do you think Al Pacino tried to stop the robbery? he ran on in the Casino to the security personal and told them that no one should leave the Casino after the robbery happened, HE RAN ON HIS FOOT TO INFORM SECURITY, as if there wasn't phones or walky talky or anything.

Let me spoil some scenes in the following paragraphs to show you how stupid this movie was:

Scene 1: they buy a big mechanical machine to dig through Las Vegas until reaching the Casino, in order to cause an earthquake in the Casino, can you even fathom that? they buy a big machine and start digging under a city and no one knows about them as it were a city for blind, mute people.
Scene 2: in order for them to monitor the Casino owner, they sent Brad pitt as a scientist to warn AL Pacino about incoming earthquake, off course, AL Pacino don't believe him so Brad pitt gave him a device for "measuring earthquake" while in fact it's a camera, and AL Pacino so blindly put it in the main room and if that wasn't insulting enough, they sent him a phone that interrupt the Casino security system, and AL Pacino walking around with the phone in his pocket not knowing what's going on.
Scene 3: the machine breaks, so they decide to buy another one from France but they don't have any money, so guess who they ask? Terry Benedict, the guy who they robbed in the first movie and return his money in the second movie.
Scene 4: the only assistant that AL Pacino have, they turn her on by a perfume, and they make her drunk so that she can take them to the diamonds room?
Scene 5: in order for them to pass a security guard, they call him and say that his kid made a problem in the school, so he leave his post to go the school, can you believe that?

Most of the scenes in this movie was made to 'entertain' at face value but i failed to laugh at any of that given the fact that it was so stupid, because sometimes the joke have to be clever for you to laugh at, to me stupid jokes aren't funny, that's why i wasn't able to enjoy this.

Back to the movie, you know how everything was planned in the Ocean Eleven, how they steal access cards, block a camera, here Casey Affleck and Scott Caan can walk around in the Casino dressed as security guards to kick someone out of a room, go to some place and hack something, everything was so easy for them, better yet, everything was so lazy, also an unknown FBI agent can enter the Casino and pretend to arrest someone and no one even ask him for an ID or anything, and remember Vincent Cassel who played a badass guy in the 2nd movie and planed to avenge them? he did absolutely nothing here, he was in-frame for 6 or 7 times and he had no screen play at all, i believe his lines were 'OK', 'give me the diamonds' and 'damn', that was the entire character.

One thing i also never noticed in the first two movies, is that the characters aren't memorable at all, because there are so many of them, there weren't enough screen play for them, if you actually counts how many lines they delivered each, it would be less than 25, it's like they were shiny plates to make the movie looks good, when in reality they weren't there, and off course, it isn't a movie by Steven Soderbergh if it had no 'twist' at the end, but it was dull and brought the movie to a new level of stupidity.

Overall, the movie was dull, lazy on every level, insultingly stupid, not memorable and in most cases unwatchable.

Review of Ocean's Thirteen

Posted : 10 years, 11 months ago on 13 May 2013 12:26

Well this was a pleasant surprise. Ocean's Thirteen, the threequel to the excellent Ocean's Eleven and the sequel to the almost-unwatchable Ocean's Twelve, is a fun and light conclusion to the Ocean's Trilogy. It's not as much fun as the original, but it's a vast improvement over the terrible sequel. Third chapters hardly ever work, but I commend Ocean's Thirteen for overcoming that trend.

The Ocean group (with the exception of Tess and Isabel) are brought together when Reuben is in poor health due to a massive shock received from being cheated of the rights of a hotel-casino he was planning to open. The con man responsible, Willy Bank, plans to open the hotel-casino himself, and win the prized Five Diamond award as well. Of course, the Ocean gang devise a devious plan of revenge that's every bit as satisfying for the Oceans, as it is for the audience.

Ocean's Thirteen isn't the strongest film in the trilogy, but it certainly fixes most of the problems that plagued the previous two.

For one, Tess and Isabel (the love interests for Danny Ocean and Rusty) have been completely eliminated from the script. They get a brief acknowledgement and little more. I'm grateful of this, because this completely eliminates the romance aspect. The romance was done so poorly in the first two, and this ultimately hurt the amount of fun that could be had. By throwing the romance out the window, there entire focus of the film is on pure fun.

While over half of the film is planning and set-up for the big con, there is hardly a dull moment to be found. The sheer excitement of the build-up was enough to keep me entertained. Combine that with a reasonable amount of humor, brief dilemmas, and the likeable characters, and you have a perfectly entertaining production. I was hardly ever bored, and the same could not be said for even the first Ocean's.

The plot is less confusing than that of Ocean's Twelve. The characters are just as fun as ever (though the screen time of many is far too short), and of course, the pay off at the end is very satisfying.

Still, despite many improvements, there are a few flaws that should not go overlooked. Like the first two, Ocean's Thirteen is more than a little implausible. Some parts are downright preposterous. Ocean's Thirteen is a smart film, but belief and common sense may need to be suspended on occasion.

And while not a direct flaw, it must be stated that Ocean's Thirteen just isn't as fun as Ocean's Eleven. It's not too far off, but I can't say I laughed as much on this third outing as I did during Ocean's Eleven. Still, Ocean's Thirteen provides it's share of fun and humor. I had a smile on my face throughout much of the film, and I was certainly enjoying myself.

The performances are great, though considering the lack of depth in each, they aren't as impressive. George Clooney and Brad Pitt are suitably suave as Danny Ocean and Rusty Ryan respectively. Matt Damon as Linus is as likeable as ever, and new additions to the cast are just as likeable.

The score by David Holmes is actually a huge improvement over both previous scores for the series. Like the film, it's fun and will make you smile, though those looking for any depth or true sophistication should look elsewhere.

Ocean's Thirteen is an indisputable improvement over Ocean's Twelve, while recapturing the easy fun of Ocean's Eleven. Easy to like and rarely dull, I had a great time watching Ocean's Thirteen. I didn't think I would ever say this, but now I want an Ocean's Fourteen.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 11 months ago on 9 May 2011 04:31

I had already seen this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I thought I might as well check it out again. Of course, like everyone else, I did enjoy 'Ocean's eleven' but, honestly, I do think it was actually kind of overrated. I mean, sure, it was a fun flick but it was certainly nothing really amazing, at least, thatโ€™s my opinion. On the other hand, I don't think the sequels were actually so bad. Anyway, the biggest issue with this 3rd installment is that we had all seen this not only once but already twice before so it was becoming a little bit tiresome and repetitive at that point. Still, there was still a prestigious cast involved (George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Elliott Gould, Al Pacino, Don Cheadle, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Bernie Mac, Carl Reiner, Eddie Izzard, Ellen Barkin, Vincent Cassel, Andy Garcia) and they obviously had a blast making this flick. It is just a shame that they only got together to make such a shallow commercial picture. I mean, I get that it was for them a lot of fun to make but, to watch it, it was enjoyable but completely forgettable. Still, to conclude, if you want a star studded cast and some brainless entertainment, it is actually a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Not the Best of the Series

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 18 September 2007 05:45

I was expecting a bit more from this movie, I wanted to see it in Cinemas but never got around to it. So I was waiting for ages to see it, so I got it as soon as it came out on DVD here.

Other people have said different things about this film - some people loved it, some hated it. The idea of having a third one was fantastic to me, seeing heaps of my favourite actors together again. I still liked (loved) the first one the best, its the most original and yet the best. Maybe this one just didn't have enough action for my liking? I can't really pin-point what it is that makes this one my least favourite of the 'ocean's' series of movies.

Actually when I think about it this one was quite original. I liked it because you didn't really think, it was visually appealing so that you didn't have to listen to every detail to figure out what was going on in this movie. That's a good thing, and really the story was great. I loved the whole Vegas and Casino thing, some of the footage of it was spectacular. And although the others are quite serious when you think about it, this one had a funny side to it, heaps of hilarious ideas came into this movie which made it more entertaining to watch.

The acting was okay-ish. Nothing special, I mean there was an all-star cast to this movie but each character didn't really have a huge part therefore I didn't really connect to the characters as much as you can in the others. It was cool to see Al Pacino as the bad guy though, I felt he did that part to perfection.

I am by no means saying this was crap and not to see it, but I was expecting it to be the best of the series and it wasn't. But still, you should really go and see this movie if you haven't already and you loved the others, this has many things in common with them. But if you didn't like the others, maybe you should give this a miss.

another sequel

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 13 June 2007 10:03

Most of the time when you get to a third installment of sequels you don't get much for your money. I did't feel that way with this movie. I knew going into it that there would be a lot of suspense, twists and turns in the plot, and something would be stolen. There was and it was a lot of fun watching the story unfold. This ensemble cast is a great one to watch and they really work well with each other. This is one that the whole family would enjoy watching. If you liked the first two, you won't be disappointed with this one.
