Paul Gernes and Per Kirkeby are internationally renowned contemporary painters and sometime dabblers in experimental filmmaking. Their concerted effort to do a feature fiction about the Vikings, based on historical-archeological reserach, has the narrative framework of a present-day guided tour through a number of sagas and legends, primarily those told by Danish chronicler Saxo (1150-1210)
