Mulan no es sobre la relatividad de los roles de cada sexo, es sobre la inevitabilidad de estos, es completamente contraria a la ideología moderna. Mulan, aun haciéndose pasar por hombre, no deja de ser mujer en rol y preferir el rol femenino. Los demás, pese a notar su gran fortaleza, notan rasgos característicos femeninos inseparables a ella aun si se hace pasar por un "él".
