Mr. Deeds review

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 28 March 2022 01:06

Apparently Adam Sandler dedicated this remake of the 1936 classic to his late grandmother. Now I can admire that, really I can, especially when the 1936 classic was her favourite film. But someone needs to tell Sandler that good intentions don't always make a good film. The ambition is there, but the film just isn't that great, not as pointless or as awful as the remakes to Psycho or the Wicker Man(which was unintentionally hilarious) I admit but sorry this wasn't good. There are one or two good things, such as the soundtrack, striking scenery and John Tuturro's turn as the Spanish butler. However, the script is cloying and lacking in wit, the direction is uninspired and the story is too saccharine and simplistic. Then in terms of acting, Adam Sandler gives one of his more unlikeable performances(I liked him in The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates and Spanglish though found him irritating here and in Click) and Winona Ryder while she looks lovely forgets her acting lessons. Overall, has its good points but it isn't great. 4/10 Bethany Cox

Spare me

'Mr. Deeds', the utterly ridiculous so-called "remake" of 'Mr. Deeds Goes to Town' (a movie that I haven't yet seen, but I'm guessing bears hardly any resemblance to this mess) is filled with childish, slapstick-y "humor", cartoon violence, and... little else. Of course, that kind of goes without saying, considering that Adam Sandler is the star of 'Mr. Deeds'. I only watched the stupid thing because most of the movie takes place in New York City (and I've been on a NYC kick as of late).

While I've never been a fan of Sandler's "comedy", I'll concede that he's a *smidge* more tolerable than some of his fellow "comic" actors who tend to appeal to a similar audience (i.e. Jim Carrey, David Spade). Which is about the nicest thing that I can say about Sandler's performance as the "simple", small-town-man-turned-billionaire, Longfellow Deeds.

Sandler's movies also tend to feature actors that I do enjoy watching; in the case of 'Mr. Deeds', the respectable supporting cast includes: John Turturro, Winona Ryder, Peter Gallagher, and frequent Sandler co-star Steve Buscemi (none of these actors give downright embarrassing performances, but all of them are far from at their best).

There's nothing else really worth mentioning about the movie -- other than that I especially hated the scene where stupid Longfellow "rescued" some cats from a burning apartment by throwing the poor things out the window (the "cats" were *very* obviously fake, but still!).

At least Adam Sandler doesn't try to be serious in it. (3/10)

Mr. Deeds review

A typical Adam Sandler movie...that being said, I usually can't stand him.
This one started out with promise and i found myself thinking, "hey! a decent Sandler movie?"
but towards the end it had reverted back to the typical pathetic attempt at a good romantic comedy.

Oh, and I feel so sorry for all of the beautiful women over the years that have had to kiss this man. Seriously.

An average funny movie

Nowadays, it seems that Adam Sandler has lost his touch and, except for those ‘Grown Ups’ movies, all his recent efforts have turned out to be some flops at the box-office (‘Pixels’, ‘The Cobbler’, ‘Men, Women & Children’, ‘Blended’, ‘That's My Boy’, ‘Jack and Jill’). Personally, I don’t think his movies have become worse through the years. I think there were already pretty weak right from the start, even if there were some box-office hits and this movie was a fine example. Indeed, this time, Sandler decided to remake a classic. I have seen both versions and even though the original is not one of my favorites, it was still a good movie whereas this remake was rather lame and unnecessary (was there ever a necessary remake ? good question...) and Adam Sandler was rather unbelievable in this character. Come on! How could you switch Gary Cooper with Adam Sandler?!? The best part was that it was eventually a success at the box-office... You gotta to be kidding me... To conclude, it was pretty much a typical average Sandler flick, I thought it was rather tedious to behold and I don’t think it is really worth a look, except maybe if you are a fan of the genre.

Typical Sandler

Adam Sandler definitely brought the original Mr. Deeds to life in this modern remake all with the humor that we have come to know and love from him. Its too bad the story pretty much mimics ever other romantic comedy he does.
