A Distaff Limitless

Posted : 6 years, 8 months ago on 18 August 2017 03:29

So, give Luc Besson a rough outline for a plot, a lot of money and loads of armaments and - PRESTO - you have a hit, right?  Sometimes,...  In Lucy, what started out as a distaff remake of the far-superior "Limitless," quickly devolves into blood, gore, chase scenes, cool SFX, more chase scenes, a plot(?) and finally ends in an incredulous denouement.  Hell, at one point, Morgan Freeman LITERALLY phones his part in!

At least the end of "Limitless" left the story line open for more (hint, hint, CBS,...you could have handled the series better, but I digress).  Lucy ended a whimper, or the beep of an incoming text message.

An average movie

Since this movie was the last one directed by Luc Besson that I hadn’t watch yet, I was quite eager to check it out. Eventually, I thought it was not bad at all. To be honest, it may have had to do with the fact that I was seriously disappointed by most of his recent directing efforts (especially ‘The Family’ and ‘Les aventures extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec’). Still, I loved the concept of this girl using  all her brain capacity, even if it had been done before in ‘Limitless’ for example, and I liked the fact that Besson tried to pull a  ‘2001’ ending on the viewers. Scarlett Johansson was also pretty good in this and you wonder why, at this point, Marvel is still not planning a standalone ‘Black Widow’ film since it seems to be definitely a no-brainer. Still, even though it was a decent watch, there was enough stuff that did bother me. First of all, I thought it was really short, barely 80 mins, and, as a result, everything felt rushed and they could have easily expanded the whole thing to 2 hours to develop this interesting concept. The cryptic introduction which was interesting at first was eventually rather really silly after all. Indeed, why spend so much time with this suitcase if you have such a short running time? Eventually, everything happening in this sequence barely made sense after all. I wish also that they gave us a more charismatic French actor to play the cop going along with Lucy, it could have much more fun. Still, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was fairly entertaining and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Luc Besson’s work.

Not a bad movie if you analyze its purposes. However, its narrative is cold and Lucy, although Johansson plays it very well, is not a charismatic character, dramatically speaking. The ending is predictable and the subject of the movie has been approached many times before. It begins well, but it ends in a very disappointing way. To sum it all up, it's a movie that tells how a girl had an overdose from blue crystals and started reading minds, controlling tv and telephones and going back in time. Seriously, that's all.

BIZARRE! Don't loose your time with this crap. It may pretend to be a good movie until the first hour, but it turns into madness and nonsense through the last part. If you have a piece of brain inside your head, you may find yourself ashamed of loosing so much time in front a complete waste of money. This is so nasty shit of a movie that made me come back to listal after almost 1 year away JUST to WARN YOU GUYS how much of a waste this crap is.

Luc Besson is a pretty good writer and has made a few good movies himself. The story looked rather interesting when I saw the trailer. So I hope that not all the good stuff was spoiled. There is some pretty cool imagery put in throughout the movie that is interesting to the story as a whole. I think the concept and idea is really neat. I wonder though how the world really would be if we had full control of our brains. It kind of feels a little bit like Transcendence which also features Morgan Freeman. Lucy has to be one of the most badass females I've seen on film. It is a very visually stunning movie. I think it was a little short and could have been a little more fleshed out. It was an interesting and fun watch. The ending was great. It's definitely worth checking out for sure.

"Lucy" (2014)

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

This was HORRIBLE!
Right from when I first heard the premise, I couldn't help but laugh at how downright stupid it sounded! Look, until right now, I didn't realise the "10% of the brain" thing was an actual misconception; I always thought it was just an expression meaning that hardly anyone makes full use of their talents. But regardless, it's still a bullshit premise for a sci-fi movie!
That's not the only scientific inaccuracy I picked up on, either. Another is that the earliest life forms date from 3·5 billion years ago, not one billion.
And even simply as a movie, it lost me right from the opening scenes, when it keeps abruptly cutting between two completely unrelated series of events; the transitions are just jarring. But the moment this movie died for me is when Lucy calls her mother and suddenly starts talking about what's happening to her, which makes her sound insane.
The second half of the movie is mostly unremarkable, but it's so frustrating because it's serving such an idiotic purpose.
I hated this movie! It's quite possibly the worst movie of the year so far, right up there with The Legend of Hercules and A Long Way Down.

My rating: 15%
