I Love You, Phillip Morris review

(OK) The real fact based story, doesn't repress the liberty and humourin the design of characters. Mc Greggor imponses a sense of tranqulity and resonsability against Carrey shenanigans...

A good movie

Posted : 11 years, 9 months ago on 26 July 2012 08:43

Since I have a weak spot for Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, I definitely had to watch this movie. Eventually, it must be one of the weirdest flicks I have ever seen. Indeed, basically, it was some mix of a gay version of 'The Shawshank Redemption', a gay version of 'Catch Me if You Can' but there was also a love story (of course a gay one) and many other things. And the weirdest thing is that it actually worked. Indeed, it was really funny and both Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor gave some solid performances and they were totally believable in those characters. Eventually, the only issue I really had was that the damned thing was rather unfocused. For example, the main character was first a cop and a family man, but then he moved to Texas, got another job, and then dumped his family and settled in Florida and all this took place during the first 15 minutes! Furthermore, I was not sure what to make of the tone they chose. Indeed, sometimes, I had the feeling the makers were making fun of the whole thing but then, you would have some rather touching dramatic scenes so it was rather uneven. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, it was still an incredible story, it was a very original feature, I really liked it and it is definitely worth a look.

I Love You, Phillip Morris review

I sat down to watch this knowing absolutely nothing about it, other than that Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor were in it (good pairing too!!). When the major revelation about Jim Carrey's character came, I laughed so hard, not because I was surprised (I was, it was a little unexpected), but because of how it was done. The movie is smart, funny, definitely entertaining, but also has its serious moments as well. Very well done, great job by Jim Carrey, and Ewan McGregor. I intend to own this and watch it a few more times for sure!

I Love You, Phillip Morris defintely has its funny moments, but seems to just fail at making a good connection. Carrey, McGregor, and Mann are all great at what they do. Carrey plays being gay extremely well, so much it worries me a little, but otherwise the film seems to just leave you hanging. Worth watching once to log into your memory, and that should be it.

I Love You, Phillip Morris review

Glen Ficarra and John Requa attempt to overthrow the genre of romantic comedy, replacing the familiar boy meets girl with a boy meets ... boy and even in prison! With humor that throws political correctness from ... back door, but never to make fun at the expense of the two main characters and their sexual identity,ยซI Love You Philip Morrisยป offers most plenty of laughter and unexpected tenderness. But then changed direction two or three times to the point that we fail to grasp the overall orientation.
Jim Carrey in this role resorting to the usual maniere, which over time has been perfect, but Ewan McGregor is the one who wins the duel of interpretation by giving discretion to the naturalness Philip Morris,a character less developed than that of Steven Russel, which is partly explained by the fact that watching the events in the light of the second.

Supremely entertaining, zippy motion picture

Posted : 13 years, 4 months ago on 31 December 2010 06:52

"Love sure is a funny thing. Makes you happy, makes you sad, makes you do all sorts of things you never thought you'd do before."

At the start of I Love You Phillip Morris, the words "This really happened" appear on-screen. And to reinforce the point, the filmmakers also added the words "It really did". Indeed, this Jim Carrey vehicle is the type of film you would not believe unless you knew it to be true. Additionally, for those who were expecting this to be another Carrey comedy featuring the actor's trademark over-the-top, rubber-faced antics, prepare to be surprised. Based on the novel Prison Breaks as well as the memoirs of the main character, 2010's I Love You Phillip Morris functions as a reminder of how good Carrey can be if he's not tied to a generic Hollywood crowd-pleaser. Without a doubt, this is a unique motion picture which melds drama and dark comedy in a surprisingly effective fashion. Armed with a zippy pace, the film barrels through sufficient plot to form a miniseries, and, though it's a tad uneven, this is a supremely entertaining motion picture.

After surviving a nasty car accident, married former police officer Steven Russell (Carrey) has a life-changing epiphany. No longer able to conceal his secret homosexuality, Steven comes out to his understanding wife Debbie (Mann), splits from his family, and moves with his boyfriend to Miami Beach. He finds his new lifestyle to be murder on his bank account, though, and Steven is soon committing every type of fraud under the sun until his actions are discovered and he is subsequently arrested. In prison, Steven meets fellow homosexual inmate Phillip Morris (McGregor), and the two instantly fall in love. Once their sentences are over, Steven and Phillip move in together. Thus begins a whirlwind love affair both in and out of prison, with Russell's inability to avoid crime continuously affecting their relationship.

The truly original, unique I Love You Phillip Morris denotes the directorial debut for Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who wrote such motion pictures as Bad Santa and Bad News Bears. The comedy peppered throughout I Love You Phillip Morris is therefore marvellously dark and nasty. The premise is familiar (consider it the gay cousin of Steven Spielberg's Catch Me if You Can), but the tone is what allows it to stand out - it's kind of a darker, weirder Catch Me if You Can with the sick-joke nastiness of Bad Santa and the type of side characters you'd expect to see in a movie by the Coens or the Farrelly Brothers. Ficarra and Requa were able to keep the film frothy throughout while still developing an at times affecting sincerity. There's a self-assuredness to the material that's very heartening. As a comedy, I Love You Phillip Morris is genuinely clever and sly. As a biopic, it's beguiling and informative. And finally, as a love story, the film is genuine and heartfelt.

Admittedly, the jam-packed plotting does not always make for a smooth-running picture, as Requa and Ficarra ended up relying a lot on voiceover narration. Also, the tonal shifts are at times rather sudden. Aside from these flaws, this is a sure-footed motion picture with a number of notable comedic moments. The matter-of-fact sexuality is admirably blunt, even if the traits of homosexuality are occasionally used for cheap laughs. As first-time filmmakers, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa exhibit a knack for smooth photography and imaginative montage (the assemblage of Steven's various prison escapes is particularly jaunty), as well as a firm, savvy understanding of comedic composition. I Love You Phillip Morris also benefits from the bouncy score courtesy of Nick Urata. In particular, the recurrent main theme is highly enjoyable.

The believability of the relationship between Steven and Phillip is one of the strongest elements of the film, as there's no doubt about how the men feel about one another. The motivations of the two are palpable and understandable - we can grasp the reasons why they do what they do. Of course, the casting helped tremendously in this department. Carrey adopted a southern drawl for his role of Steven Russell, and eased up on his trademark overcaffeination. Carrey's performance is eccentric (though comparatively restrained) and charismatic; blending Carrey's best absurdist stuff with the emotional range witnessed in such movies as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Carrey's work is particularly admirable in the sense that he was able to make the otherwise deplorable role into someone likable - no matter how many lies he tells or how much destruction he causes, it's possible to be moved by the more tragic moments in his life. Yet, while Carrey is definitely the star of the film, Ewan McGregor is the emotional anchor. McGregor delivered a tender, sweet performance as the soft-spoken Phillip Morris. Also in the cast is Leslie Mann (Judd Apatow's wife) who's charming as Steven Russell's former wife.

One would think that, in 2010, homosexuality would not be an issue in movies anymore. Yet, studio executives in Hollywood fretted over what to do with I Love You Phillip Morris for a couple of years. Due to the film's frank depiction of love and sex between two consenting adult males (one of whom happens to be a borderline psychotic conman), it has been shuffled around for a while seeking a potential distributor. It's fortunate the film was eventually released, as it's more thoughtful and a lot less unsettling than the parade of pathetic heterosexual romantic comedies that blemish multiplexes every year. Unfortunately, it flopped hopelessly. Admittedly, the lightning-fast pace prevents the film from being anything too substantial, but I Love You Phillip Morris remains a sweet, at times amusing piece of entertainment.

8.1/10

More of a dramatic love story than a comedy...

Posted : 14 years, 1 month ago on 7 April 2010 05:49

To be honest, I was thinking that this was going to be just another wacky and hilarious Jim Carrey comedy but when I watched it, I was surprised by it. I mean, the film is funny but I wouldn't call a comedy. It is more of a dramatic love story. It will leave you jaw-dropped because of the heartbreaking drama within it plus the heart warming pleasure too. To be fair, this probably isn't as underestimated like Brokeback Mountain and Milk are because it looks like a comedy and it stars two very famous Hollywood actors.

Steven starts off as a happily married police officer who spends his hours off work searching for his biological mother who gave him up as a child. But after a car crash, Steven leaves his life and family behind to go out into the world and be his true self. He moves to Miami and finds a boyfriend and from then on he starts living a gay life as well as being a conman. When his work as a conman catches up with him, he is sent to prison and falls in love with Phillip Morris. After that, Steven and Phillip try and keep their relationship intact but severe consequences lie ahead. I couldn't believe Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor in this film! I mean, them two are a gay couple! When I was watching this, it really did look like they were in love as in real life. They are another two special actors who are straight who portray characters that are gay (Examples: Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Charlize Theron, Christina Ricci, Sean Penn, James Franco). Jim Carrey's performance as Steven Russell was absolutely fantastic! I Love You Phillip Morris is one of the three films that shows that Carrey can be an actor of drama as well as comedy. The other two I am referring to are Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and The Truman Show. Ewan McGregor was like "My God, Ewan!" because, like Jim, playing a gay character was the last thing I was expecting him to play and what a fine job he did! Together, Jim and Ewan worked together very hard to send the public a very important message. I'll be damned if either one of those two actors aren't nominated for at least a Golden Globe for Best Actor Drama or Best Supporting Actor.

In all honesty, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa together create something that I think everyone would enjoy because of the comedy involved. It perhaps isn't as good as Brokeback Mountain or Milk but it was still awesome! I'll be keeping an eye on those two directors to see what is next on their list.

Overall, I Love You Phillip Morris is a beautiful yet heartbreaking true story that will low you away due to performances from Carrey and McGregor but will make you chuckle on occasions. Jim Carrey's best performance since Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and perhaps Ewan McGregor's most emotional performance so far.

Love sure is a funny thing.

Posted : 14 years, 1 month ago on 29 March 2010 12:26

''Love sure is a funny thing. Makes you happy, makes you sad, makes you do all sorts of things you never thought you'd do before.''

Steven Russell is happily married to Debbie, and a member of the local police force when a car accident provokes a dramatic reassessment of his life...

Jim Carrey: Steven Russell

Ewan McGregor: Phillip Morris

I Love You Phillip Morris, the new film which was conceived, written and directed by Glen Ficarra and John Requa, the ones also behind the darkly delicious Bad Santa. Reminiscent of Bad Santa, this film effectively balances humour with some very dark themes, though I would say the overall tone is not nearly as bleak as it evolves into later a comedy, then merges emotion with hope. Then defies our belief with surprise.
Yes my friends...This is based on real life. Yes this really does shock and tantalise and yes it proves the truth really is stranger than fiction.

The central character is Steven Russell a newly discovered gay and a con-man and having 'come out', as the former if not the latter, he concludes that the kind of homosexual lifestyle he has grown accustomed to is going to be very expensive. Until he is caught he seemed to me to be a very successful con-man, but not successful enough and he ends up in prison where he meets and falls in love with, (very quickly, and not so much across a crowded room as across an empty prison library), said Phillip Morris. His love for Phillip seems irrational and all-encompassing and when he is released he uses his powers of conman ship to get Phillip released too. After that his life is dedicated to earning or rather conning his employers out of enough money to keep Phillip happy. Or is it? I was burdened with the distinctive impression that Steven became so caught up in his own deceptions he almost forgot Phillip existed. Finally he is caught and imprisoned again and the rest of their lives are spent in and out of various prisons. Steven Russel serving a life sentence after embarrassing the system and Bush's US system, which was probably a good side to all this.

It's a touching tale, a love story and what a love...What a love indeed. The issue of their sexuality is not an issue at all. It's essentially an autobiographical account of Steven Russel whom falls in love with Phillip Morris and he wants to make him happy despite being an overt con man whom changes his identity more than some of us have had hot dinners.
Substantial performances from Jim Carrey (Oscar nomination possibly) as Steven and Ewan McGregor, (his best part and best performance in years), as Phillip go a long way to boost the film's charisma, flow and essential characteristics and poise. Not that Steven is a particularly likable guy, he's certainly a fascinating, corrupted ball of chaotic fun.
His sexuality is in essence entwined with his nature and the cloud spying which in turn resemble cocks, being raised by an adopted family and being abandoned by an unwanting mother. His hyperactive imagination and over-the-top personality are truly inspirational. His life becomes one of lies because he is essentially living in a World which has let him down in turn. He is a victim of societies weakness to meet the needs of the people it holds. The truth is Steven should have gone into acting, and you can't help but sympathize with his plight and feel the love here.

Overall, I love you Phillip Morris is one of the most original, most diverse films inspired by true events. It has quite literally balls to follow through on the gold laden material it indulges. Jim Carrey quite possibly gives one of his finest performances since Eternal sunshine of a spotless mind which was also emotional and full of original script writing. The beauty and genius of this affair is that it tricks you again and again just as Steven cons everyone in his life. His love for Phillip Morris becomes the only truth in the end, and for me that is a thing of true beauty out of all this chaos.

''I'll take care of this...Will be together soon. I promise!''
