Run Lola Run (1998) review

This was a great year for movies, and Run Lola Run was absolutely stunning and mind bending. I watched it again recently and it still had freshness for me.

Brilliant film with a great deal of depth for something that was repetatively structured. It's almost like a video game where you get better due to trial and error.

A good movie

I have to admit it, even though I'm not exactly a huge fan, for some personal reasons, I still have some really nice memories of this movie. Indeed, after I bought my very first DVD player,  this movie was one of the very first DVDs I bought at the time. As a matter of fact, I still have the DVD player and it still works (Well done, Sony!) but I don’t think I have the DVD anymore which is too bad. Anyway, in fact, I remember very well when this movie was released. Indeed, I didn’t see it in the movie theater but, very quickly, it became a cult-classic so I was definitely eager to check the damned thing. Eventually, even though I thought it was indeed a pretty a cool movie, to be honest, I can’t say I was completely blown away by the whole thing. I mean, sure, it was really entertaining, no doubt about it, but I don’t think it was really so clever after all. Still, Tom Tykwer definitely displayed some skills here and, eventually, he would become one of the most interesting directors at work nowadays and it is thanks to this movie that I discovered him. Concerning Franka Potente, back in those days, it seemed that she might have an impressive international career ahead of her but, except for a few movies like ‘The Bourne Identity’, she was mostly involved with some rather obscure movies after all. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, even though it was probably not a masterpiece, it was still a very entertaining and enjoyable movie and I think it is definitely worth a look.

Trying it Again

For anyone who likes Time Travel type of movies or the chance to do it again, this is a great film. It's one of the few German films that I've seen that completely engrossed me. Highly recommended.

Very innovative way of looking at a situation. Yes it was done before in a way by Kurosawa, but with the added techno music it made for a great movie.

Keep on Running

“Mankind, probably the most mysterious species on our planet. A mystery of open questions. Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going? How do we know what we believe to know? Why do we believe anything at all? Innumerable questions looking for an answer, an answer which will raise the next question and the following answer will raise a following question and so on and so forth. But in the end, isn't it always the same question and always the same answer?”

This is the narration at the start of Run Lola Run, so you know the following movie is going to be something different. As the title suggests, the action focuses on Lola and tells the story of her efforts to save her boyfriend Manny, and those that cross her path in the process. The whole story unfolds and ends within twenty minutes, the length of time Lola has to save Manny. Unsuccessful, we rewind to the start of the story and Lola has twenty minutes to try, and try again. The repetition could be boring, but slight changes to the story and the development of other characters around her keeps you riveted. Nothing is what it first seems. The dramatically different results of each attempt to save Manny and the resulting end are created by very minor changes by Lola and clearly demonstrate the butterfly effect, far better than any science lesson could. An enjoyable viewing experience and one of the best endings!

If you think you recognise the lead actor, it’s because she went on to become the love interest in the Bourne Identity/Supremacy films.

original

A visually inventive, exciting movie, it is also surprisingly original, despite its very simple plot.

The writer-director, Tom Tykwer, is simply brilliant: he used animation, color and black-and-white film, music video effects and camera tricks to tell Lola’s adventures – an imaginative way to convey a movie’s story.

The film has funny moments, but it is mostly the breathless excitement that makes it a film worth watching.

Run Lola

I watched this one in the theater at my college, and I thought it was pretty cool.

Lola's bf calls to tell her he's going to rob a bank so he can get some money he owes so he's not rubbed out. What happens is we see several different scenarios based on little changes that could occur with all the variables out there.

I'd like to see it again to pick up on the nuances.
