A very good movie

Posted : 8 years, 5 months ago on 16 November 2015 04:31

From time to time, you always meet someone that will argue that this movie is actually the best ever made. To be honest, I always had a hard time to get what was really the fuss about this flick. I mean, I will have to admit it, it is a very good nรฉo-noir feature, probably even the very best one but could the best nรฉo-noir feature also manage to be one of the very best movies ever made? I actually doubt it. The issue I have with this flick is that it is so well made, so slick, it might be actually be too faithful to the genre to be actually really remarkable, at least, thatโ€™s my opinion. Still, it remains a really solid flick nonetheless, easily the best thing ever made by Curtis Hanson who never managed to reach this level in his career again. Concerning this cast, it was pretty damned amazing (Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Kim Basinger, James Cromwell, Danny DeVito, David Strathairn) and they all gave some of the best performances in their career. To conclude, even though it might not be one of my all-time favorites, it is still a very good movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.ย

L.A. Confidential (1997) review

Posted : 10 years, 9 months ago on 17 July 2013 04:50

What you get with L.A. Confidential is a classic noir with all the modern trappings (though one could argue that by this point, the film itself is a classic as well). Supported by one of the best and most reverential screenplays, the amazing cast delivers a noir film that is both classic and contemporary at the same time. This is a movie that both deconstructs what it means to be a noir film and is a film noir itself in the best ways possible.

L.A. Confidential (1997) review

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 25 February 2011 05:21

L.A. Confidential most likely falls into the category of one of the best movies of the past twenty years. The complex story line seemed to burst at the seams with intelligence. I found the complexity of several different sub-plots working together challenged the intellectual part of my brain while the intense action through out the entire movie satisfied the craving of the not-so-intellectual part of my brain that enjoys seeing a good brawl followed by a good shoot-out. Brian Helgeland and Curtis Hanson did and excellent job of combining many elements of several different kinds of films into one. They seem to have made this movie with several different audiences in mind. I for one, as I have mentioned, enjoyed the intellectual aspect as well as the action, while my wife enjoyed the combination of a love story with drama. It really has something for everyone. Bringing together all of these elements into one film sets it apart from many others. Of course the best aspect of L.A. Confidential is the way that not everything is as it seems, and then, in an instant, all of the plots are sprung like a trap and come together for a grand finale. Overall L.A. Confidential is an exceptional film that contains something for everyone.

The best detective drama ever made

Posted : 15 years, 10 months ago on 13 June 2008 08:50

Suspenseful and twisted detective drama movie set in 1960s Los Angeles. I am a big fan of detective movies and this is *the* best movie in this genre. A stellar cast (two of whom - Kevin Spacey and Russell Crowe - would win Best Actor Oscars later in the decade), brilliant direction coupled with outstanding set and costume design make this one the best movies ever made. It got swept aside at the Oscar's by Titanic but is a true masterpiece notwithstanding.
