Kickboxer 2: The Road Back review

Posted : 7 years, 8 months ago on 9 September 2016 06:57

This is the first movie I have seen from Albert Pyun although I have heard of a few. I can't believe this was written by David S. Goyer of all people. I really only remember seeing Sasha Mitchell in Step by Step. So to see him as the action lead is pretty amusing to me. It's too bad that Jean-Claude Van Damme never returned for the original series. Anyways there are a few returnees here including Dennis Chan and Michel Qissi. So I always liked Sasha Mitchell in Step by Step as the bonehead character. It was weird to seem him as a lead action film star. It shows that he clearly cannot act. He also can't hold a whole movie. There were a few moments that were good though. He was at least a likable character. Dennis Chan is wonderful as the Miyagi of this series. Tong Po is as brutal as always and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa is his great evil self. The action is a bit mediocre although it's definitely more blood damage. It's not what I was expecting it to be. I find it hilarious the tag says it's better than the first one. It was definitely a lackluster sequel that didn't even require much attention. I would give it a pass.

A bad movie

To be honest, I wasnโ€™t really expecting much from this flick but since I had this very cheap DVD box set including this movie, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, when I was a kid, I actually saw the 1st installment starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and I have to admit that I was actually curious to see this sequel approximately 20 years later. Back then, I actually really enjoyed those flicks dealing with martial-arts but, nowadays, I can't say I really care for those, especially such a cheap-ass sequel of an already average Van Damme flick. This time around, he had been replaced by Sasha Mitchell who did look all right and who seemed to be able to fight but he turned out to be also a really awful actor. Concerning the story, it was rather abysmal which was expected but even the fights were disappointing. Basically, they kept using some slow-motion throughout those fights and it just looked terrible. Eventually, even though my DVD box set also included the 3rd instalment, since this movie was so bad, I postponed it for 3 years and, when I finally watched the damned thing, somehow, it turned out to be even worse. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, to conclude, I didn't expect much from this flick, it was quite terrible and the whole thing is not worth a look, even if you are a fan of this genre.
