A good movie

Posted : 6 years, 3 months ago on 20 January 2018 10:33

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since there was a really cool cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, To be honest, I didn't expect that I would enjoy it so much and I'm surprised it didn't get more attention when it was released. Indeed, the damned thing was just hilarious and easily one of the funniest movies I have seen in a very long time. For once, most of the jokes worked but Goldberg and Rogen went way beyond that and delivered something meta and, in the process, not only they did make fun of themselves but also of the whole concept that movie stars might be more interesting or worthy than any regular person. In fact, they are all egoistical and egomaniac cowards and, even though they played some exaggerated versions of themselves, I couldn't help thinking that they are probably not really much better in real life so their approach definitely showed some guts (OK, Michael Cera is probably not a major drug addict but you get what I mean). Eventually, my rating might have been even higher but a few details slightly didn't really work for me. First of all, why the Apocalypse? It felt rather random to me. Then, the lack of women involved seemed also like a missed opportunity. Indeed, I was glad that they managed to bring back Emma Watson but she was gone within 5 minutes and her connection with this gang was just too thin in the first place. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was probably not a masterpiece, I really enjoyed the damned thing which was seriously entertaining and it is definitely worth a look.

Hilarious.

Out of nowhere, i thought that this movie is going to suck so hard, that it would made me laugh (unintentionally).
But i was so wrong, that i kept laughing (intentionally) all the way, from the very beginning to the very end, every scene was hilarious, i had no idea that i would laugh at a stupid story and bizarre plot like this, but it was beautifully executed that it was nearly impossible not to laugh.
I mean the chemistry between those actors, and the variety of characters, and the presence of people like Rihanna, Kevin Heart, Emma Watson, Michael Cera and many many more, made it a blast.
The best thing about it is that those guests that i mentioned above did't feel forced into the movie, they made a short cameo and that's it, also each character was perfectly well written that this movie made me like Danny McBride and Craig Robinson and i used to hate these guys, seriously, the movie gives you a feeling that they're not just making a movie, they're having too much fun AND making a movie, it seems as somebody was vlogging a real party made by those guys.
The very weird thing about this movie (aside from the story) is the fact that they used their real names and real characters, i mean they made fun of others based on their real characters and movies, like Danny Mcbride tell Seth rogan that this is a better performance than all his recent movies and where was that in the the green hornet, implying that that movie sucked and seth rogan performance sucked, i find it a ballzy move by those actors to take insult based around their actual choices, but it was funny nonetheless.
Also it was Seth rogan debut as a director, that guy is in the right place, surrounded by the right people and have a wonderful future coming up next, and he's only like 30 years old, holy shit, i can't wait for his upcoming movies.

This Is the End review

Posted : 10 years, 2 months ago on 6 March 2014 09:57

I really loved this movie! I could not stop laughing. Yeah it is gross, immature, ridiculous, and is just plain inappropriate, but in my opinion it is really fun. The death scenes are hilarious and unexpected. There are some awesome cameos some of which I really didn't expect to see. An all star cast of comedians with other great stars as well. James Franco, Jay Baruchel, and Seth Rogen are amazing. I love how these guys don't mind making jokes of themselves either. There is a lot of really awkward sexual content which even though my wife was disgusted she still was laughing. I could have cared less about Jonah Hill being in it though as my only mark against it. The music at the end made me laugh the hardest. All in all this is definitely one of my all time favorites as it has comedy, gore, sci-fi, and some great characters/actors. I highly recommend this just don't take it seriously and you could end up really enjoying yourself I think.

Ridiculously hilarious and totally enjoyable

This movie came as a surprise package, totally enjoyable, ridiculously hilarious and I thoroughly entertained. It stars all the new gen rising stars especially the actors from comedy stream. Seth Rogen, Jay, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and many others are just awesome. But I thought Channing Tatum's cameo was a bit foolish and others come for couple of frames. Could you believe it Seth Rogen directed this movie, well he did a hell of a job in the first movie.

Pretty acceptable graphics for a fantasy movie, but sometimes it was dirty and sexual. The story centers around the Hollywood celebrities who meet at a party thrown by James Franco and soon after everything turns hell when the beginning of the end roll out. A bunch of celebrities trapped in a house preparing for the apocalypse and doing everything they could to protect each others.

The filmmaker superbly used the theme songs and movie songs especially the Backstreet Boys' song during the end of the movie for a dance like 'Slumdog Millionaire'. So far it was one of a fine comedy of the year which was based on the short video. Loved it, hope you will do same as well. Recommended.

A meta, self-effacing comedic gem

Posted : 10 years, 10 months ago on 17 July 2013 09:51

"I don't wanna die at James Franco's house."

This is the End is some of the most fun you're likely to have in a cinema during the 2013 summer season. Masterminded by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen (Pineapple Express), it's a big cinematic house party, with an apocalyptic end-of-the-world scenario being moulded into an uproarious ride featuring a slew of famous faces playing exaggerated versions of themselves. If you enjoy the Judd Apatow brand of R-rated comedy, This is the End is a godsend, one of the most flat-out hilarious American comedies in recent memory which also has messages and a heart at its core. Efficiently shot for a modest $32 million, it's clear that Goldberg and Rogen were smart in their construction of the film, using special effects only when necessary and never letting star egos get in the way of creating a meta, self-effacing ride.

Although he hates the city, actor Jay Baruchel flies to Los Angeles to visit his old friend, Seth Rogen. Growing apart due to Seth's L.A. lifestyle and affluent new circle of friends, Jay hopes to reconnect with his pal for a weekend of weed and booze-fuelled shenanigans. But Seth insists that the pair attend a party at James Franco's house, much to Jay's reluctance. Unfortunately, the apocalypse hits during the evening, resulting in the deaths of several party guests. Franco battens down the hatches, leaving a motley crew of actors inside, including Seth, Jay, Jonah Hill and Craig Robinson, though a very mischievous Danny McBride soon joins them. Hoping they'll eventually be saved, the guys remain inside Franco's mansion, rationing food and recording video diaries using the camera from 127 Hours.

The directorial debut for Rogen and Goldberg, This is the End was inspired by the unreleased 2007 short Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse. A lot of the movie's charm is derived from the array of famous faces who appear here, including Rihanna, Emma Watson and Michael Cera. If none of the main actors here are familiar to you, and if you haven't seen any of the comedies they've featured in (Your Highness, Pineapple Express), there's a good chance that This is the End will not work for you, as a lot of humour is derived from seeing the actors playing hilarious alternate versions of themselves (Cera goes completely against his onscreen persona as a coke-snorting ladies man). Also amusing are the various references to the actors' bodies of work; career choices are ridiculed and personalities are prodded. Best of all, while the marketing materials for This is the End are hilarious, the trailers did not spoil all of the strongest gags, lines or scenes.

In terms of tone and construction, This is the End is somewhat reminiscent of the likes of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. The movie is a side-splitting ride, to be sure, full of improvised dialogue, vulgar banter and a smattering of toilet humour, but Goldberg and Rogen steer the ship with skill, allowing the film to work as an apocalypse story as well as a comedy. Regardless of the light-hearted tone, the characters' fates are still taken rather seriously, and the narrative is solid, never devolving into the mindlessness of Scary Movie or Epic Movie. Moreover, Goldberg and Rogen keep the film on a tight leash, never letting indulgent improvisation or dumb jokes affect the film's momentum, and at no point losing sight of the big picture. Not to mention, the technical aspects of the production are indeed laudable; for a comedy, the cinematography by Brandon Trost is unusually strong in terms of composition, while the scattered visual effects sequences are terrific, especially the climax which also boasts marvellous creature design. Surprisingly, This is the End has a degree of depth to it, as well; it's a weirdly sweet and insightful farce about friendship and loyalty, and there are messages about the importance of being a nice guy. It's nothing too substantial, but the effort is appreciated.

Acting contributions right down the line are sound, with the actors clearly embracing the chance to make fun of themselves openly. By playing himself here, Rogen essentially admits he's the same person in all his films. Rogen knows his strengths and plays to them, delivering a performance with spot-on comedic timing and delivery. The scene-stealer, though, is McBride, who's smartly used as a supporting presence. McBride delivers lines guaranteed to bring the house down, and a late scene involving a celebrity cameo (which cannot be spoiled) is one of the funniest film moments you'll see this year. Franco and Baruchel are also in fine form, while Hill is astonishingly tolerable as a hilariously "soft and gentle" version of himself. Robinson is brilliant, too, yet again demonstrating his wonderful gift for comedy. Goldberg and Rogen reportedly aimed to push the envelope so far that all the actors would feel uncomfortable doing something, and they managed to break everyone…except for the extraordinarily game Franco. Luckily, all of the stars get a number of memorable moments to shine, and there are also great contributions from the likes of Watson and Cera.

This is the End does feel a bit long in the tooth at 105 minutes, and it probably could've been trimmed down to a more serviceable 90 minutes, but this is nit-picking. When it comes to a movie like this, its value comes down to the question of how often you laugh. In this case, I laughed a lot, and haven't been this entertained in a cinema since 2012's Ted. If you don't like this brand of humour, that's your prerogative, but if you enjoy raucous, vulgar, vehemently R-rated comedy, This is the End is definitely for you. It's the type of motion picture that invites you to party right alongside the cast, and it's arguably the best thing that Goldberg and Rogen have done to date.

8.4/10

Outrageously funny. The best comedy of 2013!

Posted : 10 years, 11 months ago on 16 June 2013 03:54

When your friends are all A-List celebrities, what is the best plan? Ask them all to be in your movie about the end of the world and have the plot set at one of their houses. It is a foolproof plan, if the comedy is top notch and in the case of This Is The End the comedy was indeed outrageously top notch.

Jay Barcuhel flies in from Canada to spend time with his old buddy Seth Rogen and after an afternoon of smoking weed and playing games the two decide to attend a housewarming party at James Franco’s house. Joining them are A-list celebrities including Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill, Aziz Ansari, Mindy Calling, Rihanna, Michael Cera and Emma Watson. As the night takes a turn for the worse and the apocalypse descends upon them, the group of rag-tag celebrities must learn to bond in order to survive.

Written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg the hilarity ensues the moment they walk through Franco’s front door. We are treated to outrageous performances and hi-jinks that lead up to the impending doom, but I’ll get to that. First off, Michael Cera’s portrayal of a oversexed and cocaine loving version of himself was the first early treat this film had to offer. This was the weirdest Cera has had the chance to be yet and it was stellar to see him representing an offshoot of his real life persona, albeit the exact opposite of who he really is but still fun because of the ridiculousness of the entire situation at hand. The cameos from Jason Segel and Kevin Hart were also perfectly timed and took a backhanded shot at Segel’s long running sitcom How I Met Your Mother.

Despite the hilarity that took place during the party, the real show gets under way when Jay and Seth take an adventure to the local convenience store to buy a pack of smokes. Jay, much to the dismay of everyone else sees people being beamed up into the sky. As things get out of hand and chaos ensues the group of comedians find them holed up in Franco’s house trying to ration the food and water supplies to the best of their ability.

It then becomes an improvised end of the world comedy, with situations that were taylor made for the talent involved in this film. Franco and McBride going back and forth was gut wrenchingly funny, while Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel added their witty brands of comedy to the mix. Add in a cameo appearance from Emma Watson and what you get from these guys is one of the most awkwardly presented scenes in a long while.

However, the best part of this film ends up being the ability of the entire cast to laugh about the poor choices they have all made, allowing the humour to not only be about the apocalypse happening right outside Franco’s front door, but it allows it to be self-depreciating allowing these guys to call each other out in the most absurd ways possible. When you let Seth and Evan handle the apocalypse, it is inevitable that movie heads down a weird path. This movie becomes a lot darker and lined with religious tones then I had expected. It adds a layer of complexity to the level of humour that Seth and Evan are used to. Amongst these guys who can’t seem to put their differences aside, they not must deal with repenting for their past mistakes in order to get them to heaven.

The coolest part of this film is that it is made for long term fans of the crew involved. Those who understand all the one liners about their previous films and real life will get a kick out of this film. It is a lot of fun from start to finish and you are guaranteed to laugh if you like this brand of humour. This film is certainly not for everyone, and goes out its way to offend people and be off the wall. Be careful when deciding to this, especially if you do get offended easily by raunchiness and overt sexuality. Despite that, it is fun for the whole family (just make sure your whole family is over 18)
