A good movie

Posted : 7 years, 3 months ago on 25 January 2017 08:56

To be honest, I had absolutely no idea what this movie was about before watching it but since it was suggested by one of my favorite Listal members,  I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I’m glad I gave it a shot because I really liked the damned thing a lot and, in my opinion, it provided one of the best depictions of a psychiatric ward I have ever seen. Indeed, I have both some professional and personal experience regarding such environment and what they provided in this movie was pretty much pitch-perfect (I have to admit that the patients were probably most of the time slightly too cheerful though). Furthermore, the main character was really good thanks to a solid performance by Keir Gilchrist and I was completely able to identify with this guy. Unfortunately, they were a couple of things that bothered me and prevented this movie from being really amazing. First of all, I was amazed that the main character would be allowed to have a romantic relationship with another patient without any reaction from the staff. Indeed, during and actually even after such therapy, it is strongly advised to not start any romance because you are far from being emotionally stable (for example, let’s say you were clinically depressed, if you would fall in love and eventually break up afterwards, it could push you down the hole again and ruined all the hard work done to recover). Well, to have a relationship with another patient while you are both in therapy, that would be a major red flag and I’m stunned that they could make out in front of everyone at the end.  Anyway, the biggest problem was in fact that his stay in the psychiatric ward was just way too short. Again out of personal experience, I know that someone who is clinically depressed, even suicidal, would need at least 3 months to get his sh*t together. I mean, within 5 days, you might get to the point that you have acknowledge that you have some major issue going on but that would be it. As a result, many viewers argued that the main character was not actually depressed because it was all solved way too fast and too easily and it would have been solved if the guy would have remained in therapy a little while longer. Anyway, in spite of these flaws, the rest of the movie was actually pretty awesome and I think it is definitely worth a look.

It's Kind of a Funny Story review

Overall, a decent movie. A little slower paced, and off the wall, it definitely drew me in and kept me interested. A quieter comedy, that also deals with some more serious issues in the main character's life, but I quite enjoyed it. Not to say that I will really remember it as being spectacular, or even want to watch it again in the future, despite Zach Galifianakis and Lauren Graham, two people I love to watch.

It's Kind of a Funny Story review

What a surprising movie! I really enjoyed it. This film recalls “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” only more teen. It also resembles the movie “500 Days of Summer”, by the way it is approached, drawings, memories, even in songs. Music more “indie”, even in quotes like: “Radiohead, Vampire Weekend, Rex T. ..”. The best thing about this movie is that it is an antidote to all this, does not come with a mantra that is didactic and moralistic which does a few of our problems, just because they are not as dramatic as you might expect from who’s depressed. This movie is like a recovery process, listens, understands, supports and helps. Find someone to talk to, be excited about the things you can still do in life, make your own plans and have the courage to dream, are conditions of life are key factors for happiness. And the sweet way which was explored this issue so heavy, it was pretty cool. I don’t really see how much where I may criticize the movie. But who expects a laughable comedy, won’t like. Due for being a drama film with a subtle comedy, as is 500 Days of Summer. It would be like, a clever comedy.

It's Kind of a Funny Story review

In my point of view, expectation is an important element regarding the experience of watching a movie. In the case of "It's kind of a funny story", the audience, after watching the trailer may have the sense that this is a superficial movie. That is not really the case.

The movie tells the story of Craig, a teenager on the verge of deciding his career (college application) and after having suicidal thoughts he checks himself in a hospital's psychiatric floor. Once there, he bonds with some of the other patients. Eventually, Craig feels better about himself after take a look at life through the eyes of his new mates.

The central theme of the film is very deep as something like "how do you want to live your life versus how the society compels you to live it". Some of the characters presented in the movie simply didn't know how to react in the society at some point. They have that in common.
There's when the film gets really meaningful. If you think about it, they really get better inside the facilities of the hospital because a new artificial society (composed by the patients) is created. It is a very simple one. Manageable.

The movie also have some comic relief and well dose out. Zach Galifianakis is something else in this movie. The only other movie I've seen featuring him was "the hangover". When I found out that he would play a mentally disturbed character, I thought "again??". Here, is a little different: Galifianakis' character shows bits of drama, comedy and, yeah, dumb crazyness. All well performed.
I've never heard of Keir Gilchrist but he seems a nice actor and he is very good in the "flashback" scenes.
Two last thoughts: the Queen musical scene is cool and Emma Roberts is very pretty.

So, "It's kind of a funny story" is a very fluid movie to watch and has a meaningful message. The acting is very good and probably will please different kind of audiences. The movie deserves an 8. Check it out.
