A good movie

Posted : 8 years ago on 12 May 2016 11:29

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, even though not everything really worked in this movie, I thought that this Hesher character was pretty awesome and fascinating to behold. Indeed, it is not often that you get to see someone so chaotic, so random in his behavior and, normally, a character like this one would be rather cringe-inducing and annoying to behold but, somehow, it worked really fine here thanks above all to another really solid performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Unfortunately, even though Hesher himself was really neat, the rest of the movie didn’t really impress me. I mean, Devin Brochu and Rainn Wilson were not bad at all but their story was nothing really original and I had a rather hard time to care about what they were going through. And this was even worse with Natalie Portman whose character barely worked here. Indeed, it’s not that she was bad in this movie, it’s just that Hesher was already seriously random and they shouldn’t have brought up yet another girl in this story so randomly. Furthermore, I thought it was another pathetic attempt to make a really cute girl look supposedly plain and almost ugly. To conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still liked the damned thing though, just because Hesher was so interesting to behold and I think this guy by himself made the whole damned thing worth a look.

Not a Thrash Movie!

Posted : 12 years ago on 3 May 2012 05:48

Who could have thought that a mash-up of indie sensitivity and thrasher attitude could work this good?

One thing everyone should know before watching this movie is this: this is NOT a heavy metal movie, got that punk? This is a movie about a lot of things that happen to work great with some thrashy punky dirty in-your-face stunts.

What things you ask? Lets see. Its a movie about grief, loss, anger, coming of age, death and loneliness. It´s like an alternative little red riding hood story in a modern setting. You have the granny who represent wisdom and death, two lumberjacks (at first Natalie Portman then his father Rainn Wilson) who cant bear with their own lifes and, of course, a wolf. Guess who is the wolf?

They all exist around a sad, lonely, messed up red hood kid who just wants to get his happines back and meanwhile brings all the other characters to terms with their own selves.

CONS: All in all the film finds it difficult to balance realism with dramatism (hint: as allways the second wins) and the story doesnt work as good as it should but its way more than an ok movie. Hesher is not the protagonist but steals too much attention, Gordon-Levitt does a fair enough work with some good moments but I think his character limits him and itself.

Hesher review

Yeah.. this movie made me cry like a baby.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is unrecognizable! Crazy character! Crazy script. Not in the sense that the plot is nonsensical but is just that it is the kind of movie where even though I didn't fall in love with any of the characters, they made an impression on me and in the end I cared about what would happen.
I really liked.
It was interesting seeing Rainn Wilson and Natalie Portman as supporting actors! And I look foward to see this kid in the future :)

Hesher review

Posted : 12 years, 6 months ago on 1 November 2011 06:20

Hesher was brought to me by a friend who thought I would enjoy it.

Although it DOES have it's flaws, I can oddly relate to this film.

Lets start with the flaws. This film is so funny in the fact that the entire time Hesher is this badass, no rules, looking out for only me kind of character but eventually and at random times turns into this guy who is like all knowing, and caring individual. Pick which kind of person Hesher is, please. Regardless of this fact, when he IS portrayed as a caring individual, he does it in the right way by comparing the big situation to a story he has, in which the story is usually silly and completely hilarious.

Another flaw in this film is Natalie Portman's character. Nicole was completely unnecessary, to the point of being painful. I can see if she had a bigger role in the film, but overall except for the obvious situation she gets involved in, has no huge factor in this movie. Why did they hire a big time actress like Natalie to do this role? I have no idea. Nicole also was suppose to look in her early 20's when she looked like she was pushing 30.

Finally the last thing I hated about this film is that T.J never gets a break. Ever. In real life if someone his age had to go through everything T.J. did in this film they would be emotionally scarred for the rest of their life. It's almost painful how much you just wish something good would happen to this poor kid.

Ok now some good points. The story was overall great. I love the grandmother character, which makes this movie great. She reminded me of my grandmother, which made me sad, but also made me relate.

Another reason I can relate (and the biggest reason why I love this movie) is because I have friends who are EXACTLY like Hesher. Even appearance. I kinda flipped my lid a little when I saw Hesher for the first time because a list of people who are exactly like him popped in my head. It brought me back to late night parties when I was 17, hanging out with the bad ass kids, staying up till 5am getting drunk, rowdy and spraying graffiti all over buildings in the small town I live in. I loved Hesher's spirit.

That being said I must give applause to Joseph Gordon - Levitt and Rainn Wilson for their awesome performances in this film

life sucks, you're going to get wet either way .

Hesher is one of those strange films that for some god-awful reason, garnishes cult acclaim. Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is drifter who likes rock n' roll, porn, and Natalie Portman. Somehow on top of all of this he manages to try and do well by everyone, despite the fact that he may use your washer and dryer with or without your permission.

This "life is rough" film is hard to understand; it can't decide if it wants to be a deep drama or a dark comedy. There was several moments that were hysterical in the film and several elements that made you wonder what exactly was going on in the mind of Hesher himself.

The film opens with a kid chasing after a red car , as if it is the only thing that has any meaning in his life. This kid is moving, if he gets stopped ,he finds away around the obstacle. He wants this car. Shortly hereafter we discover that this kid goes by the name of T.J.(David Brochu) and he is a very troubled little boy. However, the car is his nonetheless. We don't know how he came about owning a car at his young age or why it was wrecked in the first place.

T.J. also has a bully problem that he just passively deals with as if it were meant to be. This bully of his is mean and cruel; were talking throwing the kid across the room and then sitting on him and spitting in his face cruel.

It seems as if Hesher comes out of nowhere and suddenly tries to help T.J. and his family. This is helpful and it isn't at the same time. Hesher in many ways works like management, to solve the problem he must first observe it and then deal with it. There are times when he is helpful for T.J. and there are times where he is just as cruel as the above mentioned bully. However, Hesher is more helful when it comes to solving problems in the house or taking grandma Madeliene (Piper Laurie) out for a walk.

The character of Nicole (Natalie Portman) bugged me the most throughout the whole film. Her encounter with T.J. was at most helpful and at the same time counter-productive in the same light. T.J. was being bullied and she stopped the bully from doing more bully like things. Nicole then continues to build a relationship with T.J. and they even share a moment where they truly connect. Then Hesher comes along and does well what Hesher does make the situation worse. I could go off into the nitty gritty , but I think it's obvious what happens next.

The film's climax is truly surprising because, we know something bad has happened it is just a matter of what. It is surprising that lifestyles can change when you lose someone who truly matters the most to you. This is what happens here and it is crazy to think that it must happen again to balance things out in life.

Hesher's message is clear and well delivered in a clever metaphor about either getting wet or avoiding the rain altogether. However, as bad things are bound to happen in life the best we can do is to not get down about them. Hesher himself doesn't seem to get down about anything; in fact he even smokes some mary jane with grandma Madeliene.

There are some well acted scenes here, most notable the scene where Nicole(Natalie Portman) and T.J.(David Brochu) Connect. However, the point of all this is delivered way late in the film and lacks any real closure. My Recommendation is to check the forecast and carry an umbrella, Hesher is not worth your time.
