Pointless remake

Posted : 3 months, 1 week ago on 28 January 2024 11:11

I have nothing against remakes in general, some are great, some are good, some are quite, some are both awful and pointless. The remake to the classic Halloween(1978) isn't only awful, as a remake and on its own merits, but like the Psycho, Nightmare on Elm Street, Wicker Man and Stepford Wives remakes it is also pointless.

Not only is it awful, pointless and not scary at all, but it is the complete opposite of the original in every way. Sorry about the comparing, but in this case it is inevitable.

The film is not cheap as such, but just not atmospheric. The camera angles do get obvious after a while and the editing gets a little frenzied. Some of the music was nice, but the cues like the camera angles seemed obvious in how they were placed and it isn't successful at enhancing the mood of the film.

Halloween(2007) does also have some awful dialogue, particularly in the Loomis and Myers scenes that are ridden with clichés. The story is just not very interesting this time round, it is timeless in notion for sure but not in execution. The film feels more like a very dodgy homage and Rob Zombie fails to re-create what made Halloween work so well(the primal fears, the truly demonic characterisation of Michael Myers and how the scares are used). Also the film does take too long to set up and the sexual talk gets too much and disturbing after a while.

Also disappointing is how Halloween(2007) incorporates its scares. Instead of the suspenseful atmosphere and genuine jolts that the original had, this remake does something that the original cleverly avoided, using excessive gore and treating it in a cheap fashion.

I didn't care for the characters either, all of them are badly-underwritten, especially McDowell's Loomis. The character of Michael Myers also disappoints greatly, it is not demonic enough with the potentially unnerving characterisation completely stripped bare and I agree contradictory in an attempt to explore his background.

The acting is pretty awful. Malcolm McDowell is a great actor and has saved a not-so-good-movie more than once, but seeing how weak his character and dialogue is, not this time. Scout Taylor-Compton can't do anything with her role either, and while I blame the script more than anything else Tyler Mane comes more as a badly-written greasy-haired psychotic killer rather than a personification of terror. The less about Sherri Moon Zombie the better, for my money she can't act if her life depended on it.

In conclusion, pointless and very disappointing. 1/10 Bethany Cox

An average movie

Posted : 7 months, 3 weeks ago on 18 September 2023 10:25

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Not to be confused with the classic directed by John Carpenter or the other recent remake by David Gordon Green, this is another version directed by Rob Zombie and it seems to be rather forgotten nowadays, even if it was actually fairly successful at the box-office when it was released. Well, I thought it was not bad at all. Indeed, what I really liked was the fact that Zombie took a really different approach, at least, during the first half. Indeed, for once, they focused on Michael Myers’s childhood which was a nice idea. However, it turned out to be only a very long introduction and the rest of the movie was basically a rather faithful remake of Carpenter’s classic. Eventually, the only thing that bothered me with this remake was that they made the same mistake that they already did with ‘Halloween II’ (and maybe with the other sequels but I haven’t seen those) which was to give Michael Myers some kind of super powers. Sure, at first, it was impressing that that this little boy became this huge menacing mountain but this effect unfortunately wore off rather quickly. Indeed, to reach such a muscular figure, it would mean that the character would have hit the gym almost on a daily basis which obviously didn’t fit at all his reclusive temperament. Furthermore, by making him super strong and seemingly invincible, it makes the character so much less relatable. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was probably another pointless remake, I have to admit that it turned out to be a decent watch and it is actually worth a look but probably only if you really like the genre.

A modern and intelligent re-reading of Big John's masterpiece. Zombie avoids the trap of old school repetition. Impactful!

Not half bad......

With the wildly acclaimed, classic and amazing Halloween made back in 1978, It isn't exactly fitting to say that I wanted this remake to happen, as I was already pleased enough. tons of sequels were made thereafter as well. Some were great, but most were just the same old thing, and didn't come close to capturing the magic that was held in John Carpenter's classic. The original still stands as my favorite horror film of all-time, no question. So, booting up the franchise in the 21st century seemed rather disrespectful to me, especially considering Rob Zombie was at the helm; the man known for his grotesque, over-the-top, blood filled scenes, portrayed in his other projects.

This remake doesn't exactly bring to life any of the classic's elements. Though that shouldn't be a huge surprise, considering the way horror's are nowadays. Zombie seems to be programmed on one tone; continuous violence, and he probably always will be. After seeing House of 1000 Corpses, and The Devil's Rejects, I prepared myself for what was to come, waiting anxiously on how Rob was going to handle it this time around. Sufficed to say, he stuck with his favorite sadistic and bloodthirsty theme, turning this remake into something completely separate from any of the previous installments. I'm no longer considering this a remake, but instead a completely new franchise for the new era. For if I was to judge this film by it's predecessors, It would've completely fallen flat. Once I got the notion of what Rob Zombie was doing, I just sat back and enjoyed it for what it is; a mindless blood-crazy extravaganza.

The story is along the same lines as the original, but focusing more on what Micheal did before his incarceration, in his home, and why he became a maniac. The 1978 version's majority was about what Myers did after he'd escaped the mental institution, showing just about 10-15 minutes of his childhood. They are completely different chronicles, and I really liked them both. However, The Classic will never be surpassed. It depends on preference, really. If your a teenager you'll probably prefer the remake, as it's mainly just a lot of very entertaining kills. More mature audiences who are big fans of the original, may enjoy this, but only for a guilty pleasure flick to watch when you don't care to think too much. I'm in the latter category, because I really liked this movie, just not for the same reasons as the original. I have fun every time I see this, mainly because I sometimes do enjoy mindless bloodshed.

Having said all that, the remake isn't that straight forward. In fact, the story isn't bad, and occasionally pays homage to the original, which was nice on Zombie's part. Most of the deaths are very well done, albeit sometimes too over-the-top, but they somewhat resemble that of it's predecessors.

The Friday the 13th remake failed to distinguish itself from most other slashers, with the by-the-books directions it took, and rushed, unnecessary scenes. I'm also not a big fan of Jason Voorhees, so I found it to be a pretty bad film.

On the bright side, Rob Zombie's remake of the infamous slasher; Micheal Myers is a fresh and entertaining feast, full of some nostalgia, and much entertainment to be had. Just don't expect anything like John Carpenter's visionary masterpiece. Take it as a wholly different franchise, and you should have fun.

7.8/10

Rob Zombie's Halloween

Posted : 13 years, 10 months ago on 5 July 2010 09:07

I would vote this movie zero stars but that's stupid because then nobody on here would be able to see how much I hate this movie.

Let me start by saying that I am one of the biggest Halloween and Michael Myers fans you will ever meet, I own all the Halloween movies and the Halloween Anniversary DVDs and despite my rage against Rob Zombie's Halloween remakes, I have bought this movie and the uncut version of this movie because I am a true Halloween fan, however this remake is a joke!

Rob Zombie has totally ruined the Halloween movies, first he changed the mask from classic plain white to a burned and torn mask and yeah if he used that mask because Michael Myers was electrocuted in Halloween Resurrection then fair enough, I get that, but this is not a follow up movie to Halloween Resurrection, this is a remake of the original Halloween.
Secondly he made Michael Myers ridiculously tall, I mean come on, at that height he doesn't have to kill him victims with a knife, he might as well just stand on them.
Thirdly there is way too much sex in the movie, i'm not against sex in horror movies and I know it's kinda tradition to have sex in horror movies and then get killed but Rob Zombie's movie is full of it, the original Halloween movies have been a success without the need to use sex to sell the movie. I know it's the 2000s now and movies have changed alot but there's just no need for that much sex and the rape scene in the uncut version was just unnecessary.
Finally and let me say this I could add more points about why I hate this movie but i'm gonna stop at the forth point because this review is already pretty long. They showed Michael's face, Michael Myers is suppost to always keep his mask on, in all the years that Halloween has been running, they have only showed his face in split second scenes, Rob Zombie ruined that and they couldn't of made his face look more ugly, his hair is way to long etc.

However I did like one thing about Rob Zombie's remake and that is that Rob Zombie went into more detail about Michaels childhood and family which probably gave fans more of an idea about why Michael Myers is evil, maybe, I know it did for me so that's the only good thing about this movie.

I'm still rating it half a star, I cannot take this movie serriously, I look at my Halloween collection and I am embarresed to have Rob Zombie's Halloween in with the classics.

your typical zombie film

considering the fact that 'Halloween" is Rob Zombies("House of 1,000 Corpses and "The Devil's Rejects") 3rd feature film its as awesome as ever. However we do see michael myers face and learn how bad his child life was.(not seen in John carpenter's "Halloween") "Halloween" seems like a sequel to one of the "pirates of the carribean " films loaded with tons of nudity, gore, violent killings, and ireverent humor. this could be considered a "sequel" to Zombie's earlier work.

Halloween in August

Rob Zombie is a genius with his character development. Not only does he introduce Michael Myers as a child, he takes the original movie's focus on Lori Strode and redirects back onto what should have been the main character all along, Michael Myers. I love both equally, but the rebirth is by far the gorier and more disturbing.

Halloween review

This movie was better than I thought it would be(from Rob Zombie, I thought it would only be gory and pointless). I think it would have been good as a stand alone movie and not as one of the series. If it wasn't a remake I think I'd have liked it better. The only thing really the same in this movie was the names. It didn't follow the same plot and it really wasn't what I thought it would be. I liked how they went into Micheal's past and showed what he went through, but in the orignal he was a six year old boy who only killed his sister with no reason for doing so. In this one he was a troubled ten year old with lots of reason to kill those who wanted to hurt him. He was a normal psycopath, so when he got shot he should have died. He killed more people in this one. Some points were good, I just thought it should have followed John Carpner's story better. Also, I hated Dr. Loomis in this one, he wasn't a wise doctor, he was selfish and stupid.

Good, but not as good as the original

Posted : 16 years, 8 months ago on 29 August 2007 05:32

I just saw this movie, and I got to admit Rob Zombie did a pretty good job. Overall the movie was good, but it doesn't compare to the original. Of course nothing ever really does, well except maybe the remake TCM I liked it better than the original. Of course having Jessica Biel in it didnt hurt matters...lol

Sorry got sidetracked. Halloween was good. The cast overall was good... I got to admit though I didnt like who they cast a Laurie Strode, it just didnt work for me. If youre a fan of the original then you'll like this one. Of course thats just my opinion.
