A serious contender for the best ever Bond

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 18 March 2022 07:46

I am a fan of the James Bond series, and Goldfinger is just amazing for so many reasons. As much as I love Dr.No and From Russia with Love, I think Goldfinger is a serious contender for the best Bond film ever.

For me Goldfinger is the slickest of the Bond films in terms of how the stunts are performed and how the story is told. The story mayn't be the most exciting of all the Bonds, but it is still very gripping. The direction is sly, the cinematography is stylish, the locations are stunning and I can never get enough of the theme song sung by Shirley Bassey.

The script is sophisticated and humorous, while James Bond is still his suave and charismatic self, Pussy Galore is fabulously sexy and Auric Goldfinger himself ties with Blofeld as the best Bond villain, and a deliciously bizarre one he is too, being obsessed with gold and everything.

Other than the theme song and Goldfinger, the action is what makes this film. I love the gadget designs which are wonderfully over-the-top, while my favourite scenes include Shirley Eaton's legendary gold-plated death, the duel with the bowler-hatted sidekick Oddjob and the midair showdown between Bond and Goldfinger.

The acting is superb. Sean Connery gives his best performance as the character of Bond, although Connery is the master of suavity and charisma he is even more suave and charismatic here. Honor Blackman is sexy and enthusiastic as Pussy Galore, while Gert Frobe is amazing as Goldfinger. Overall, a golden treasure and a serious contender for the best ever Bond. 10/10 Bethany Cox

A classic

Even though 'Casino Royale' and 'Skyfall' were critically and financially hugely successful, even though Daniel Craig turned out to be a terrific James Bond, this flick still remains easily my favorite James Bond installment. Indeed, in my opinion, it is the only movie which perfectly mixed all the basic elements which you can find in this old institution. However, since it was only the 3rd movie with this legendary character, the makers were still really creative and not constantly repeating themselves (which is always the case nowadays even with the recent 'Skyfall'). I mean, that's the charm and the curse of thoses movies, this familiarity, the fact that even before the movie has started, you really know 90% of what is going to happen, how it is going to happen and who is going to take care of it. In my opinion, it wasn't the case back then in 1964. Back then, they were still perfecting the formula and it will never be that good again. I mean, Sean Connery, the ultimate James Bond, was at the top of his game, the James Bond girls were mythic (it doesn't get much better than the gold painted girl and Pussy Galore), Auric Goldfinger was one of the best villains and there was a terrific title song by Shirley Basset. Above all, for once, I really enjoyed the plot, probably the best James Bond story, and the reason I didn't really enjoy the movies starring Daniel Craig since they all featured some flawed stories. So, you may wonder why my rating is not higher since I really enjoyed this flick. The point is that, even with the best James Bond movie ever, I still think that the formula is rather limited and, to be honest, I have never been really a fan of those flicks. Still, to conclude, it is a really fun and entertaining spy feature featuring the most famous spy ever, a classic, and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

The best Bond film ever

It's a pleasure to comment on a film like this in negative form: Not as good as Dr. No or The Spy Who Loved Me. It's better! Waaay better and probably the best Bond film I've seen so far!

The reasons are quite simple: It has Gert Frobe as Auric Goldfinger, the main villain and arguably the best Bond Villain ever. He is not your average, usual world-domination sort of a guy. He is smart, intelligent, brutally cunning and evilly convincing. He is also the only to almost make a pussy out of James Bond. Too bad, or is it good, that his greed overcomes him in the last moment and sets Bond free. Accompanying him is Oddjob, a butler everyone wants but no-one wants to be on the receiving end of. Mute and strong, Oddjob is single out the best henchman ever shown onscreen, related to Bond movies or not. Next we have Pussy Galore, the Bond Girl which can be considered as one of the best top 5 Bond Girls. A great performance by Honor Blackman and pretty much handles everything convincingly.

This - alongside From Russia With Love, Dr. No & A View To A Kill - is one of my dad's most favourite Bond films and he recommended it to me!

I really enjoyed this film and it surely was more fast-paced and occasionally funny than the 2 predecessors!

Bond movies, although hyped up, are really thrilling and the majority of the time excellent. Sean Connery is clearly James bond in my book. He made Bond a household name and gave him swagger. He's simply right for the role. In this movie some people find it a "bore" at some parts. I find this to be untrue, maybe I'm more patient than others, but not everything has to go BANG! BOOM1 every couple of minutes. There's still a great amount of action throughout the movie, with "boss!" spy weaponry! Oddjob is a killer villain and is just awesome! This is film definitely ranks in my top 5 Bond films, it's quite fantastic.
