Hated or Divisive Movies That I LOVED (47 movies items)"Often Hated For: Feeling derivative and being saddled with an unwarranted "whitewashing" controversy. Reason I Love It: If it feels a bit unoriginal it's because it's a pretty loyal adaptation of the source material which, in turn, influenced many films western audiences were familiar with by the time of it's release. Having been a fan of the anime and manga I appreciated its loyalty and the expansion of themes of identity which, ironically, were emphasized by the very casting of a white woman "

“I already saw this movie but since I just bought an awesome brand new TV, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, even though this movie was a critical and commercial flop when it was released, to be honest, I don’t think it was so bad after all. Indeed, the whole thing looked amazing, the action scenes were badass and they managed to nail the mood of the original Japanese animated feature. However, even if the story was decent enough, unfortunately, they did make some mistakes though. Of course, there was the whole controversy about casting Scarlett Johansson in the lead role and I think she was indeed miscast but not because she is not Asian. I mean, since Johansson is one of the only bankable actresses in the world, it completey made sense that the producers chose her so t” read more

“So glad they did the anime/manga justice and didn't just turn this into a mindless effects and action movie (though there is plenty of both). The philosophical quandaries remain and the stunning aesthetics serve to recreate the world around the Major. I loved the more in depth elaboration into the characters and events.
It was a downright pleasure seeing scenes so familiar to me come to literal life before me, and I actually greatly enjoyed the changes made. I just wish they would of marketed it the right way so it could have found it's audience. Even then, it would be a small one on account of the ludicrous and unfounded "white-washing" controversy. But, hey, I'm just glad I got to see this movie happen at all.” read more
