An average movie

I have always been a huge fan of those clay-animated features by Aardman so I was really eager to check this flick. For once, they dropped the clay and opted for the first time for CGI (the 2nd and last one so far was ‘Arthur Christmas’). Apparently, they made this choice because there were too many water scenes which would be too difficult to handle with clay. However, even though the expectations were pretty high, it was eventually a flop when it was released. Personally, I had mixed feelings about the whole thing. I mean, I thought it looked really good, which was something you should expect from Aardman but the story and the characters were not really amazing. There was definitely some funny bits and the bad guy was really cool (I also liked ‘Le Frog’) but I thought that the main character was pretty underwhelming, especially if you compare him to the awesome and charismatic Wallace and Gromit. There was also some overkill visually. I don’t know, maybe I should give it another shot and watch in English this time (the first time, I watched it in Dutch with the kids). Still, to conclude, even though it was slightly disappointing, it remains a decent animated flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

I want the slugs!

This is my new favourite animation. It's funny right from the word go (the slugs are the best), the storyline works out really well and it's far better then the latest animations that have been going. Barnyard & Madagascar for examples. It reminds me of a cross between Shrek (obviously because the same people who created Shrek created this one too) and Wallace & Gromit.
And it really is a fluke that I got to watch it because I hadn't even heard of it before (they had it playing at the video shop)! I think a lot of people are going to miss out on this one which is a shame because it is really enjoyable.

Have people lost it??

This world is a completely lost cause. Has everyone's brains turned to mush from too many 'American Idol' scream-fests and intellectual shows like that 'pick a number on a suitcase' crap or 'are you smarter than a 5th grader?'

The reasoning I'm ticked off is that recent crap like 'BARNYARD', 'OPEN SEASON' and even 'NORBIT' for Pete's sake killed Flushed Away at the box office. In terms of monetary stats, Flushed Away was a bomb, being made for $120 mil and only bringing in $65 mil. But in terms of entertainment, I think this is easily up there with Shrek series as one of the best looking CG animations, as well as it being filled with non-stop laughs aimed at both adults and kids in the audience.

Now perhaps the concept is what kept the audiences away, because honestly, when i saw the previews, I thought it was another CG cash-cow with poor story (pet rat gets flushed down to the sewers - doesnt exactly SEEM like a good story) but every part of this film is brilliant. The animation looks like Shrek and the humor and accents are British, and that works like magic for some reason.

Let's hope its a massive DVD sales hit, so the studios fire the company that was in charge of promoting it this past holiday season, and have incentive to create more gems like this in the future instead of complete lunacy like BARNYARD.

Flushed Away

Posted : 17 years, 6 months ago on 5 November 2006 09:24

Just watched this movie today with my son. It is a very good family movie and will keep the adults attentions also. It has a good story line which is missing in a lot of cartoon movies. The quality of the computer animation is very well done. The basic storyline of the movie is that a pet rat is flushed down his toilet into an underground city of rats. There is a toad in this city that is trying to get rid of the rats. Our main characters has a lot of adventures (most are very humerous)on his way to helping save the city. Of course there is a female rat that attracts our hero's attentions also. This is a Dreamworks release and follows the quality of the animation that they have produce the last few years. This is a movie that your kids will enjoy and the adults won't fall asleep while watching.
