Fatal Attraction review

Posted : 1 year, 7 months ago on 28 October 2024 07:14

(NX) A más de 3 décadas de su estreno, no resulta más insana o implausible o misógina; se mantienen a flor de piel sus prejuicios. Close es mala/demente con convicción y Douglas impecable; los giros de terror entran cuando ya el drama sostuvo el resto

A classic

Posted : 10 years, 1 month ago on 3 May 2016 03:22

I already saw this movie but, since it was ages ago and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out again. When it was released, this movie was a huge hit. Nowadays, it would seem impossible that a thriller like this one would ever again become the biggest movie of the year with all these huge blockbusters but, back in 1987, this movie managed to be the highest-grossing film worldwide. Anyway, in the erotic thriller genre, it is definitely a classic and, in my opinion, what made this movie worked was the perfect cast. Indeed, Michael Douglas was basically born to play such guys (see also ’Basic Instinct’) and he was fine. Even more impressive was Glenn Close who was a rather odd choice and no one at the time or even nowadays would  think of her to play a sexual psychopath but she really nailed it. Unfortunately, as pointed out by Glenn Close herself, the movie completely ignored the fact that  her character was probably mentally ill and this aspect was never developed in this movie which was too bad. Indeed, instead, the character played by Douglas was set as a victim, a guy who basically committed a rather minor ‘indiscretion’ and who should be allowed to go back to his life as if nothing really happened. I mean, if they had flirted but he had rejected her advances and she would have kept stalking him, that would have been a really different story. Even more problematic was the fact that, in spite of Close’s impressive efforts, her character was basically reduced to some kind of unhinged psychopath and there was no room to develop her thoughts and feelings about what she was going through. The ending was also so over-the-top and so removed from reality. In my opinion, it was an attempt to remind the viewers that they are actually watching a movie with some completely fictional characters so they shouldn’t bother reflecting about themselves and their own behavior. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, it is still a decent thriller though and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Fatal Attraction

The story is pure melodramatic trash which sees the family foundation needing to be protected at all costs, but Glenn Close’s performance and Adrian Lyne’s stylish, tense direction make it worth viewing.

In fact, Close single-handedly elevates the entire movie from pulpy trash to Oscar caliber material. Her performance is a fierce, vulnerable and slowly unraveling turn of one woman’s break from reality and descended into sexual obsession, jealous and psychotic rage. In another year, she would/should have won the Oscar for Best Actress (she lost out to Cher in Moonstruck).

And for two-thirds of the run time Fatal Attraction appears to be a solidly written and incredibly well acted discourse on why men cheat and one woman’s fragile psyche. It isn’t until the last act rears its head that we’re suddenly thrust into a borderline slasher movie. Throughout Lyne showcases his unique visual eye – stylized colors and atmospheric shadows combined with odd angles. He gives the film an appropriately erotic and dangerous glow about it. And he manages to systematically ratchet up the tension. It comes in small spurts before we see the full breathed of just how traumatized and broken this woman is, and how far she intends to go to get him to take culpability for what he has done.

While the ending undermines it, you can’t help but admit that Close’s psychotic siren is right in her feminist rants: Michael Douglas’ character should have taken responsibility for his indiscretion. It may not be great art, but Fatal Attraction is a mostly well-done and juicy sexual thriller whose positives far outweigh the negatives.

Excellent thriller!!

Wow! Fatal Attraction is indeed a fatal attraction between the actors powerful performances, strong direction and screenplay and the audiences who are watching the film! There were quite a few similarities to this film that I have watched before such as Cape Fear (both original and remake) and the film adaptation of Stephen King's famous novel Misery. It is a story of obsession, desperation and also commitment of how much Dan still wants his family despite the affair and how far Alex is willing to go to get Dan.

Set in New York in the late 1980s. It tells the story of Dan Gallagher who is an attorney for New York who lives with his wife Beth and his six-year-old daughter. Whilst Dan's wife and daughter have gone away for the weekend, he meets Alex Forrest and is almost instantly attracted to her. They begin an affair but when Dan realises that the affair was a mistake, Alex will not be ignored! Not now, not tomorrow, not EVER! So now this is where it becomes dangerous for Dan and his family. How far will Alex go just to be with Dan? Michael Douglas was a fine actor in the 80s! In fact, on the same year of Fatal Attraction's release, he won his first Academy Award but not for this film (was for Wall Street). One thing I must say is when people keep on saying that Alex was the villain all over and attacked the innocent family. I mean, she wouldn't have done what she did in the film if Dan hadn't even begun the affair in the first place so it is partly his fault. Yeah, it was really bad what Alex did and Dan didn't deserve it all but still shouldn't have had the affair with her behind his family's back. Despite the famous films he has been in, I would call Michael Douglas an underrated actor unlike his legendary father Kirk Douglas. Up to 60 actresses were considered for the role of Alex Forrest but Glenn Close was the lucky woman to have won the role (despite without the director's consent). Glenn Close was excellent as Alex Forrest. Her performance in Fatal Attraction did lead to her role as Cruella De Vil in the 101 Dalmatians remake, I believe, seeing as it is that psychotic, stubborn and deadly type! There were some intense moments where Close didn't really scare me or hold tight into my chair but nevertheless she still did a fine job! Yeah, Alex is a villain but I can't believe she is ranked #7 movie villain of all time by the AFI!

Adrian Lyne did direct this film absolutely brilliantly! What I thought of Lyne when he said that Glenn Close was the last person he wanted to play Alex Forrest was 'You fuckin idiot! Goes to show what you know! She was the main reason for the success of the film!' There were 20 directors who were in line to direct Fatal Attractions but all of them passed away from it and let Adrian Lyne direct it instead. It's funny because like the first half of the film, it is like a soppy true love affair but the other half is a psychologically disturbing rollercoaster! It's rare but it still does happen.

Overall, Fatal Attraction is a very powerful, disturbing and intense thriller that gripped me from start to finish and it bound to terrorise audiences worldwide and keep them on the edge of their seats all the way through.

It Was Just a Booty Call!!!

Geez, talk about a Crazy White Bitch!! This movie was assigned for my girlfriend to watch for college regarding the topic of mental disorders and instead of letting her suffer alone, i decided to watch it with her; after all how much could one movie hurt me? The buildup of the situation was steady and at a pace everyone could follow, especially when she drops the bomb on him and shows her true side. Not the adult interested in one night of unattached infidelity with a married man, but a manic depressive psycho hell bent on keeping that married man for herself-By Any Means Necessary. Many stunts she pulls would have had me killing her minutes into the film, but then again I found her to be as attractive as an alien from the great John Carpenter film "They Live". FORMALDEHYDE FACE! It's a sad fact that not only are there men willing to throw away what they've worked at for years, but there are really women out there as crazy and dare i say MORE crazy then the one depicted by Glenn Close. If you are into this type of film i would recommend it, and there were quite a few situations i could relate to with the poor Mr. Dan Gallagher so yes, this film did achieve it's goal in the sub genre it was aiming for as one of the ones that stands out.

Telephone Operator: Operator. May I help you?
Alex Forrest: Operator, I've been trying to get 555-8129. 212? The recording says its been disconnected.
Telephone Operator: Just a moment please.
[pause]
Telephone Operator: I'm sorry, the number's been changed to an unlisted number.
Alex Forrest: Operator, this is a real emergency please. You need to give me that number.
Telephone Operator: I'm sorry. We're not allowed to give out that information.
Alex Forrest: Well *fuck you*!
Telephone Operator: My place or yours?
[Alex slams phone]
