An average movie

Posted : 8 years, 11 months ago on 22 June 2016 01:23

If I recall it correctly, for some reasons, I actually saw this movie with my wife in the movie theater when it was released. To be honest, it was a rather odd choice since it seemed to rather cheesy but, I have to admit it, I always had a weak spot for romantic-comedies and I probably thought that it would be some decent material for a romantic date. Anyway, the whole thing was basically some kind of homage to the fluffy comedies made in the 1950s and early 1960s, especially the ones starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson. Anyway, even though Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor seemed to have a lot of fun with this material and even though they were both quite charming, I really had a hard time to care about the damned thing. Concerning the actors involved, more than 10 years later, Ewan McGregor is still one of the most interesting actors at work but even though Renée Zellweger was at the time a much bigger star than McGregor was, we don’t hear much from her anymore. Anyway, to conclude, even though this movie was nothing really amazing, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Superb art direction

Regardless of how simple the premise of this film is, it's so consistently well done that it deserves recognition. Like admitting to listening to Prince and/or Michael Jackson, I'm happy to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed this film.

The animation at the intro is just superb, it makes me want to create a 'movie introduction appreciation group' just to feature this and Shortbus.

The early sixties aesthetic creates such an immersive world, I can't help but proclaim this movie a success.

A Puzzling Movie

Posted : 17 years, 12 months ago on 8 June 2007 06:27

I went into this campy send-up of the bubbly romantic comedy classics of the 1950's and 60's expecting to hate it. Instead, I came out slightly puzzled. It's not funny enough to be a parody. It's not heartfelt enough to be a tribute. So what is it?? I have no clue, but I like it!!!
