This movie is my favorite of all time. The acting is phenomenal, and the storyline is very real. It's so real that the pathos leaking from this movie touched my heart and made me think twice about the subject. When the movie finished, I literally sat in the theater, amazed. I felt "wowed" and moved by the film I had just viewed. I definitely recommend this movie for either its acting, its message, or the actors (Leonardo isn't too bad to look at).

1990s. Sierra Leone. Civil War. Solomon Vandy (Hounsou) is taken away from his family to work in the diamond fields. Diamond smuggler Danny Archer (DiCaprio) ends up in prison where he overhears that Solomon has found a rare diamond and hidden it. Their quest for this diamond will bring them together. With the help of American journalist Maddy (Connelly), the two men will try to save Solomon's family.

Wonderful script, decent acting from everyone - finally DiCaprio has a respectable role, and is actually good! -, great cinematography, my hats off to the scouting location manager.
The violence shown is rather evocative, and necessary to depict the country's situation.
Unfortunately I found the ending quite predictable.

Still a very good film that I recommend to everyone.

Great movie and superb acting especially from Djimon Hounsou although for me I don't believe Leonardo DiCaprio was exactly up to par, sometimes his accent was just all over the place but I found the movie good enough for me to look past that. Maybe a bit too long for my liking but personally it didn't take away from the film and I do highly recommend it.

This film follows other films like "Lord of War" and "The Constant Gardener", highlighting the problems faced in africa by setting a fictional story against the backdrop of the continent's problems.

And it does it well. The cinetography is great. The plot holds together. But best of all - the characters are relativly three dimensional.

Everybody in the film doesn't suffer the fate of being "bad" or "good" or even "wonderfully callous." They're all self motivated with their own goals and desires which are mostly self-serving even if we would normally consider some of them "good" and some of them "bad".

As such, rather than being a simple morality tale there is at least merit in watching the transformation in the characters during the ensuing maddness brought about by the state of afairs in the film.

Not bad. Worth a watch.

Let me start by saying that the quality of the cinemaphotography and settings for the movie were superb. I really enjoyed the locations that were used in the movie, some of the scenery was spectacular. After saying that, I knew after about 20 minutes into the movie that I would be seeing end credits listing the facts and figures about conflict diamonds. Well I wasn't disappointed, right after the movie ended we got to see some closing statements about conflict diamonds and their effects on warfare. Well I got to admit the only thing I knew about the movie going into it was that it had a pretty cool looking trailor. I don't like reading too much into reviews because I don't like to read spoilers. I wish I would have looked into this movie more. I don't like being preached to when I watch movies like this one. I thought it was going to be a fun action movie (which it was), but I didn't want to get a lecture at the same time. I gave the movie a positive rating because it is a well made movie and the action really rocked. At the same time, I was a little turned off knowing that I was seeing someone's message about diamonds. Hell I can't afford to buy the things anyway so it didn't do much for me. I have mixed feelings about recommending to see this one. If you do go to watch it, go into to it knowing that you will be preached to along the way.
