Before the Devil Knows You're Dead review

Posted : 10 years, 3 months ago on 25 January 2014 09:10

A little slow-moving, but was interesting to see how some small things slowly escalated to bigger things. Acting was good all-around, plot was realistic but could have been paced a little faster. Not a typical entertaining thriller for sure, but still one worth the watch.

Monet and envy are a deadly combenation, and if you don't know how and when to stop, it can be a very slippery fall, just like in this family

A very good movie

Sidney Lumet has recently passed away and this was his last directing effort. During his very long career, Lumet has directed a few classics (12 angry men, Dod day afternoon, Serpico,...) and a also few stinkers (The wiz, Gloria,...). So, this was Lumet's final feature and I must say, it was a great way to finish such an illustrious career and I guess this one will go in the category "underrated/unknown gem". First of all, there was an impressive cast (Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Albert Finney, Marisa Tomei) and they all delivered some terrific performances but, above all, I thought that the directing was really amazing. Indeed, when you think about it, the story is nothing really amazing but it is way it was told that made it so spellbinding to watch. 50 years earlier, Lumet directed the amazing '12 Angry men', which still stands as one of the best movie ever made and, here, with this final movie, with a completely different directing style, he gave another great piece of cinema. To conclude, this flick was just fascinating, in my opinion, it is a really underrated movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Sidney Lumet's work.

Great performances, decent movie

Likes: The performances by Ethan Hawke, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman were awesome. Theys should have gotten a nomination for them. The story was very good. Michael Shannon had a really good part.

Dislikes: It got old fast. By this I mean it was just the samething over and over again. Now I know it was the style of the film, to show what a certain person was doing at a certain time. It really bored me

Verdict: Awesome performances, decent movie, good watch

unoriginal ending

Posted : 16 years ago on 11 May 2008 11:09

Hoffman and Hawke play 2 brothers. Because they need money, they plan a robbery, that goes wrong... very wrong.

Hoffman and Hawke's performances are quite good, so is Marisa Tomei's and the other supportive actors'.
The script isn't that original, you can predict what will happen, and it's really too bad, because there were many possibilities, and unfortunately the scriptwriters didn't choose an original ending.

All in all, I can't really say I "enjoyed" this film, nor would I recommend it to anyone.
